Why are you even wasting energy thinking about being angry? The whole global warming panic is a complete farce anyway!

The following was posted on a blog on the personal website of one of the artists performing at the New York show:

.....I woke up this morning with hope. Excitement, even. Live Earth is taking place in 48 hours, and I'm starting to feel the first ripples of what could become a revolution.

I hope that for all the cynicism that's existed around this subject, we can all uncross our arms long enough to give this event a chance to impact the world in the way that I'm beginning to feel that it could. Now isn't the time to dissect the rights and wrongs. (If you're hoping Live Earth doesn't work, you have a lot of soul-searching to do.)

With this kind of lineup, there's no cause or crisis that wouldn't be positively affected by an event of this scope. Live Earth isn't a show - it's a showing, a presentation of an idea. Artists like us don't just get together to each play 20 minute sets every weekend, you know. We're also usually pretty sensitive about the order in which we take the stage, and I've got no problems with my 5:12 PM set time. The Police, Bon Jovi, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, and yes, myself and my dumb face are all openers for the true headliner - the power to literally change the world's mind. The star of the night is an idea, and all eyes will be on it. And to that effect, I hope that Mr. Gore and the event organizers will keep in mind that for as much as we the artists represent their message, their message represents us.

Mr. Gore, for six hours, you'll have the collective ear of a generation. Tell the world how to change itself, and keep to the salient points - the big, unbroken potato chips at the top of the bag, so to speak. This is your big moment to show us all how easy it can be. Go with the "fly direct whenever possible" bit further down the road. Make the call to action feel like music makes us feel; that sometimes the only way to make it through the tough times in life is to bob your head to the groove and float it out. (That's hippie talk. The audience will get it, I promise.)

To the journalists who will lay in wait for the perfectly maligned moment of hypocrisy, you will probably find one if that's how you want to spend your time. Just use this as a measuring stick; give Live Earth's initiative at least as much benefit of the doubt as you've given to the iPhone, or a new Radiohead album.

Sure, if I wanted to be cynical, I could pose the question as to what happens if the biggest concert on Earth takes place only to hear the world respond with a resounding "that's nice, but have you seen the cat that plays piano on YouTube?" But all I feel going into Saturday afternoon is hope. And lots of it. After all, even the hardest moments in life have some hope hiding in there somewhere. And that's where the musicians come in. We deal in hope every day.

I look forward to seeing you all out at Giants Stadium. As a side note, I'll be signing autographs at the Roy Rogers restaurant at mile marker 112 in Secaucus.

    This will work......

Maybe it's not all about self promotion? Maybe, just maybe, some of the artists taking part believe in the message Al Gore is promoting?

I think you will find its actually very real. Just because a bunch of clueless celebrity hypocrites get involved in something like this doesn't change the facts.

PS. I don't think playing your HiFi is really the issue here. I have yet to hear an environmental campaigner damining the playing of music as environmentally unfriendly. Look to your cheap flying habits, your year round exotic veg and your cheap Chinese tat for the real problem areas.

Actually I do think global warming is a real worry, and I do think that modern living is to blame. I know what you're on about Nando, as I think most fund raising concerts are puke-worthy (after all some the artists themselves are in a much more privileged position to donate money than the rest of us), BUT, this is an awareness raising thing, not a money raising thing. Personally I think that anything that helps us focus on the environment is a good thing anyway, as we're fucking everything up pretty much everywhere even if you disregard global warming. In some ways I think that a global catastrophe that wipes out half the worlds population would be a good thing for the planet.

Mind you, I see little indication of governments leading the way on environmental issues, no genuine endeavour to improve things, just hot air. It seems to be left to the individuals conscience.

Or alternatively you can bury your head in the sand and live in complete denial, and say it's just the same as bird flu....

Of course, it is very easy to go along with the idea that global warming is not caused by humans... but even if that is true, it still seems a bloody good idea to cut down how much toxic crap we throw in to our own atmosphere, doesn't it? If it is humans causing global warming on this scale, then it’s a doubly good idea!

It does annoy me how the focus seems to be on TVs on standby and leaving lights on, though. Things like flying, the industrial development of China, disposal / manufacture of electronic goods and so on make that pale in to nothingness. These are not easy to answer but I think if the will is there, things can at least be vastly improved.

I recently talked to Martin (Felix here) who is a architect, about Britain moving over to wind and tidal power. From what he was saying it is quite possible, given our large coastline, to offset a lot of our power generation to such methods. We need to actually get off our butts and do it though, on a BIG scale.

...sorry I didn't mean to write that much!

Yes, I always snigger when I hear the "...turn TV's off standby" one. I guess everything helps though.

Truth is, there's already loads going on behind the scenes in the field of engineering that the media don't report on. Things like naturally ventilated office buildings, etc. Sustainable design in the new buzzword.

I know there are problems with the environment, but this "campaigns" only have one result, the rich countries continue to polute, but criticize the poor ones for cutting down forest, after they have cut theirs...

Also, the rich multinationals start using things like recyclable package so the poor ones cannot compete...

    What is new...

The responses in this thread go a long way in illustrating why nothing will be done...and why, ultimately, it's a good thing for the rest of the universe that nothing will be done.

Sorry, the human race is just too bigoted and dumb to be worth worrying about saving. Happily, the planet will recover once we're in the dustbin of history where we belong.

Just glad I've got no kids!

Stop thinking in the short term.
Start thinking from a perspective other than human.

    Adapt or die ;)

    Did The Police play...?

Dame if they did as I missed them.

p.s. my neighbour's a BMW dealer and he was just telling me the waiting list for X5's is several miles long...I'd say some in the crowd at Live Earth would be on the waiting list.
