Well, today i dropped a fair chunk of dosh, considering what it is, on the top of the range Sony discman. And to cut a long story short, it sounds bloody marvellous. And that is with the freebie fontopia headphones (they don't do bass though). Getting a pair of Senn PX200's next week which should sort that out. Anyway, dead chuffed with this little purchase - should do me nicely in the interim period, as i now officially have no functioning hifi system.
Incidentally, it has the worlds longest battery life for a portable  (120hrs), plus a host of other features.

Oh yeah, forgot to say, which i thought was quite amusing. There is a large ferrite ring on the power cord, for when the Sony is being used direct from the mains. On a bleedin' portable. How bizzare. Tweaking on portables now

Yeah, heard very good reports about them. Should pick them up next week. Only going for the 200's as i want a closed back design. I believe other than that the 100's are identical.

    cheers

They're really comfy and come with an excellent storage case.
I picked mine up for €40 at Schipol airport last month and they've made the 320kb MP3's on my iPod more than acceptable :MILD: . The Sony's (which weren't stock ones) truly are crap in comparison.

Agree completely since I have one as well! I bought some of the Sony in ear canal phones MDREX71SLB which made the thing sound even better and they really cut out ambient noise.

    cheers

I hope i don't get ostracised for getting so enthusiastic about this combo, but it sounds well....very good indeed. Picked up the Senn PX200's today, and it is safe to say that the fontopia's are now permanently in the drawer. Fantastic cans for their small size and really comfy. I'm listening to it now (unlike the hifi which i always had to listen to it through the wall) - and i can't even here myself typing, they bock out noise that well. And isn't it beautiful how there are none of the speaker/room nasties, when listening through cans - everything sounds just so......natural. Cool:cool: The other thing whihc crossed my mind, is that a portable must have some inherent advantages, in that it can be used off batteries, so none of the associated mains nasties either.

Does anyone know if you can get portable headphone amps just out of curiosity?

The Linn Classik btw is certainly on my very long future audition list. But TBH i have no idea what i will get yet. After this short experience, it will certainly be centered around a tasty headphone set up, as a primary concern, (but still with speakers). I'll be keeping my worthwhile tweaky bits WM, for whatever arises in the future :D, unless you fancy buying a few power mods and isolation devices Ian ;)

Happy listening ReJoyce - coll little things aren't they. Quality tunes on the move. :MILD:

    cheers

For those wishing to 'maximise' their portables:

    http://www.hifistore.co.uk/product.php?qsProd=PX200&S=cf48f7f10ea369bb8b185a78aca65612

Can be had cheaper if you hunt.

    .............

Thankfully MO, mine doesn't look like a chocolate chip cookie - nice sleek aluminium. :MILD: My fave cookies are the jobbies from Tesco's they make in store.

Saw the worlds smallest/lightest discman today, made from magnesium i believe  (Another Sony effort) I remember that stuff used to burn like a firework in chemistry at school. My knowledge is poor though, admittedly.....

Are these the ones where you get 5 in a bag for 99p? - loverly..... Best, IMHO, when they've just been baked and are still soft. I never learn that eating all 5 in a row makes me feel sick - kinda like the biscuit equivalent of a hangover.

Those are the ones. Spot on about the eating 5 in a row thing. I do it nearly (Mrs Cookie sometimes confiscates them) every time as well......and then feel seriously rough. They are tasty though. Cookie's favourites :D

I don't know about buying portable headphone amps but you can make one.
The one that most people seem make is the CMoy by Chu Moy.
    Link here

Tanget has some good instructions on how to build a CMoy.
    Link here

    I built a CMoy into a mint tin with 2 9v's and an OPA2132.
It made in a large improvement to music out of my minidisc portable.
It also sounds loads better than the headphone outs of a Rotel RA-931 and a Rotel RC-970.
Infact the CMOy sounds better as a pre-amp driving my RB-970 than the RC-970:eek:

Thanks for the link, but i have an aversion to anything DIY.

    ...................................................................................................

Robert Cyrus - i've been trawling headfi for a while now - some interesting options. I'm interested in a headphone/preamp arrangement as well, similar to this:

...although this one is not renowned for sounding all too brilliant. Do you know of any similar products to this?

Revisited your headphone amp FAQ on HFC today too :)

Thanks for the heads up on the Altoids gizmo, very cool.

    cheers
