I don't know the guy, this isn't free advertising, but the start of this eBay item description is just sooooo true:

    TEAC VRDS-7

    So in summary.

Everyone I have spoke too regarding teac thinks its basically boring and shite.

This guy is insinuating that the only reason the teac is shite is because of a mains lead.

Done like a kipper I thinking.

I don't have anything against Teacs, it was his description of recieving new toys to play with.

I wholly dispute that a mains lead could make that much difference. Good sales technique though.

Of course we would have to hear it first. Don't underestimate mains leads, the difference between theworst one and the best one for a particular piece of kit is often huge.

The worrying thing about this guys mains lead, is that that it is apparently only has a single insulation layer, and to all intents and purposes looks like some quite well known speaker cable.

I'm not rubbishing the guys efforts, but if I was going to bid, there would be quite a bit of close questioning.

As for receiving the new bit of kit, it's almost the same here every time as well. What is it they say about anticipation being better than the real thing!

    Cheers

Personally I think that this guys "screened mains cable" looks far too similar to a screened audio cable that you can buy from Maplins.

    You be the judge:

Maplins screened audio cable code XS38R:

    *****WARNING*****
I am in no way saying that it is safe to use screened audio cable as a power cable. In fact I would advise against it. I am just stating that in my opinion they look the same. The maplins site does say that this cable will take 200Vpeak but I think using it as mains cable is pushing it too far.

fully agree with both points about the cable

As Timpy said, a single insulation for a mains lead is bad mmkay.

Also Warren has a good point aswell, if it is that cable then in no way are those leads safe, neither would they pass the stat requirements

Now me, (not having done anything like this at all), would have removed the captive lead and fitted the correct IEC inlet socket/plug, and use some 'Nice wire' between said socket/circuit board, then you can select a aproperiate mains leads to suit :)
BTW ANDY I'm on the case :)

Surely the socket is *bad* in so much as it's MOre stuff in the way. Wouldn't ut be best to just wire it straight in? Obviously not as practical, but probab;y best? No?

Not condoning using it, but the cable is sort of double insulated, with outer insulation > earth braiding > inner insulation > Live/Neutral.

Not too clever using solid core for a flex though, is it?

The cable is rated at 200v peak, our mains is nominally 340v peak.

Given you can buy proper screened mains cable this usage of audio coax (if true) seems reckless at best.

    379-671 from RS for instance.

    Hi

I think the design that this person uses is similar to this.
