I've been in need for a visit to the dentist for some time. It's one of them things I'd put off, then having done so for so long it's got rather bad. I had a few fillings done when a kid, and all seem to have grown/fell out.
We're meant to have someone coming into work to give us details of a dental/health plan thing. I know nothing about how such things work, but wanted to see what they have to say before going for a check up...

Last night I felt a slight ache. Enough to make sleeping hard. A couple of pain killers and it seemed to calm down.
I got up for work this MOrning and though I could still feel it, it wasn't too bad. By the time I'd finished work, and perhaps due to not being distracted from the pain I was ready to chop my own head off.

Phoned every local dentist in the phone book and had answers from "can't help you sorry", to "try calling in 3 MOnths".

I'm now loaded up on pain killers and seems better. There's an emergency dentist I can call from 9am, so I'll see how it is in the MOrning.

Regarding the pain. OUCH!!! I generally consider myself as quite good at handling pain, but toothache is a real leveller. It makes you pathetic. The only other time I remember toothache was when getting ready to get on a coach back from London. I was in no way going to get on there feeling like that. I was quite willing to miss the coach and pay for a taxi home or something at the time.
When it was really hurting earlier, if someone had offered to cure it, i'd have gladly handed over bank details. Infact, if I had a first born, I'd have probably given that over too! lol.

Lets see how it goes in the MOrning...

kidney stones by far... it's like shitting a melon....

Mo; go to the chemists and get some clove oil, little 10cc bottle will give you the very best toothache relief just dab it on the sore tooth.

and for the full clove oil experience get Marathin Man with Dustin Hoffman out on DVD.

I needed root canal treatment a few years back on my rear molar and the anaesthetic didn't work! I've never felt pain like it AND i was dosed up on pain killers at the time.

The dentist put a sedative in the tooth and a temp filling and i had to come back a week later...
Back in the chair next saturday, the dentist still couldn't numb it after 3 shots so she had to inject straight through the hole she drilled in the molar.

    :mana:

Didn't feel a thing after though.

Hope i never get kidney stones!

Woke up. Seems fine today. Strange, but I'm not complaining!
The pain wasn't coming from a specific tooth, and not even in the area (top, back, right) where I've been MOst concerned about. Instead it was a general ache all across the bottom.
I'll consider this an early warning sign.

I'll be having my top wisdom teeth reMOved next friday :D

She said she'd normally take the bottom ones out too, but showed me the xrays. The roots hook outwards and would be rather awkward (hospital job) to get out.

    Can't wait :)

what joy, the tops aren't so bad, i had mine done, they have short roots and once you stop tonguing the hole it leaves you'll never notice they are gone.

and your frineds will all ask 'Mo, have you lost weight?'

and then you can make up some ridiculous diet story to spin them about how you lost weigght from your face so fast.

Sorry but reminds me of a joke.....

The Queens visiting a military hospital, and she comes to a ward with just three men on it. She goes up to the first man, and says to him 'What are you in here for?'
    'Haemoroids' he replies.
'Oooh that must hurt' she said. 'What treatment are you getting'
'Wire brush and Dettol' he replies.
'You're very brave' she said 'what are you wishing for?'
'To return to fight for my Queen and country' he replied.
'Fantastic' she said and awarded him the Victoria Cross.

She moves on to the next man.
'And what is wrong with you?'
    'Venereal disease' he replied.
'What treatment are you getting?' she asked.
Dettol and wire brushing' he answered
'And what are you wishing for?' she asked
'To return to duty for my queen and country' he answered
'That's marvellous' she said and gave him the VC as well.

She then turned to the third man
    'What's ailing you then?'
    'Sore throat' he answered
'And what treatment are you getting?'
'Wire brush and dettol' he answered
'And what are you hoping for?' she asked.....

'To get the fuckin' brush before the other two guys:D

    Thanks Billy Connelly

Dentists - so used to them I don't worry any more. I've got a rare syndrome called Nance-Horan and teeth with that are MESSY. I've had 29 permanent teeth removed and still a full set barring a rear molar (which got removed after the root canal went bad - said canal job was done with NO anaesthetic as a) I hate needles and b) the tooth was hurting so much anyway a bit more pain was negligable).

I've even got a tooth coming out under my tongue, and a front tooth that's finally showing only about 28 years late.

    I've even had fangs...

This is me after the first op in 1985 (19 out in one go!):

Root canal is certainly the worst procedure though - had two now (the aforementioned one, and another where he caught my nerve with the anaesthetic needle - now THAT hurt!!!).

Mo - good luck - hope you get an NHS dentist ;)

Jeez, no anaesthetic? Nothing but respect for ya Dom.
Since my last post, i made a return to the marathon man clinic and had another RCT. Once again the injection didn't numb me up properly (again) and it was like a re-run of 3 years ago, although not quite as painful.

Anyway, glad it's done now. Better to get it out of the way them to wait for it to get unbearable.

    Good luck MO!

Worst pain: a tooth abscess. Had one a few years back and it was f**king agony. Had to have holes drilled in the back of my teeth to let the pus drain out. The pain seemed to get worse and worse until it reached unbearable levels. Then my mouth filled up with pus - not once but three times - and then the pain started to subside. You can see why people in medieval times died form these - it eat a hole the size of a golf ball into the bone of my cheek.
