I went up to manchester on the train today and took the view that i'd rather be seen reading mayfair than hifi choice in public. the guardian and some work it was.

    anybody braver than me?

trains? are they still about then? i thought they never ran and crashed or blew up if they did. personally i'd rather walk than get on a train but each to their own.
(the exception to this is the london underground system - but then i've not been into central london in 4 years and can't see a pressing need to any time soon).
    cheers

Yep, despite the best efforts of the selfish majority, some of us who have no option still have the ability to use them... :)

Seriously though, we went up to London this weekend - saw some REAL trainspotters drooling over our IC125 as it left Bristol; we managed to get into 1st class on the weekend upgrade, so had a prime view. Lots of laughing at their lunchboxes and anoraks ensued!

That said, I was reading Hifi Choice AND the News of the world (hey, it came with Buster on DVD - not bad for 80p!). Our mate had some nice porn :)

I'd second that - apparently, cartoon sex with imaginary monsters was created to get around Japanese censorship laws :D

Recently, I took my girlfriend's 8-year old niece to buy a magazine at a local newsagents. From the bottom shelf, amongst all the kid's mags, she selected a "Seijin manga" magazine. When questioned, the newsagent said he thought that all manga stuff was for kids.

    hell no,

I quite Like Anime videos and comics and I have a few Manga and ADV films that are rated (18) so clearly not for kids.

What you find a lot these days is newsagents and shops confusing the harmless stuff like pokemon, digimon etc that personally I dont like with the Anime that has a higher graphic detail and content and has often had naked women involved including as you say tentical sex allthough that isnt as common as you may think.

if you like that kind of thing have a read of ghastly's ghastly comic...
    http://www.ghastlycomic.com/d/20010509.html

there are some class characters on there such as the tentacle monster who is against interspecies sex, the wizard who is babysitting 'baby cthulu', zipper ninja, drunk and bitter jesus, freddy and lord tentaclax the shy virgin tenticle monster.
a warning though: it's definately NOT WORK SAFE so be careful. also may include some stuff that you might find offensive so again be careful.
    cheers

Sure, no problem - if confronted, just say you're thinking of buying a new minisystem and wanted to know what's the latest model with the most blue LEDs.

I don't have an issue with it. If someone in the train with me thinks I'm a nerd because I'm reading a hifi mag then fine. I'm unlikely to ever see them again.

Oh yes, and they're wonderful! Well, if they're like this:

    http://www.rhb.ch/index.e.php

I've just returned from a research conference at St. Moritz and I got to ride the Rhaetian, one of the world's great railway trips. Everyone should do it once.

    ahhh tones,
trains of that sort fair enough, also stuff like the orient express etc. are also fine. but what passes for public transport in the uk where there seems to be a dept. of transport mandate that every carriage shall:
    1) have one (1) drunken belligerent chav menacing the other passengers.
    2) have one (1) pool of bodily fluid on the floor.
    3) have the remainder of the floor sticky.
    4) have odour of dust and wee sprayed liberally around the carriage
    5) have one (1) inconsiderate tit with open back headphones playing bob the builder (gabba remix edition) at volume 11.
    6) have newspapers strewn about the place.
    7) may optionally have a bunch of backpackers blocking the exits.
    8) may optionally have someone having a sly fag.
    9) have any toilets blocked by an entire toilet roll or oprionally be in use by a horny couple for the entire trip.
    10) serve the most appalling beverages known to man from a rattly cart pushed by hilda ogden.
    11) may optionally have a 'care in the community' case ranging from carriage to carriage showing why care in the community is a bad idea.
    12) may stop at random intervals for reasons depending on what the spliffed up gits at the control center think are funny.
    13) all announcements must be completely uninteligable.
    14) random train changes must happen at least once per journey.
    15) all quick ticket machines must be out of order and only 1 open ticket window during rush hour.

and that's not even the dangerous stuff.
    need i continue?
    cheers

You are using hentai as a noun here, which is strange since it is an adjective.
TBH, I dislike manga and eromanga intensely (the steep decline the genre's popularity is cause for celebration IMHO). Sad nerds often insist on "reading" their comics on the train, frequently while they are jammed in under my armpit.
FWIW, I believe tentacle sex was a sub genre of the 'erotic" wood block print genre known as shun-ga that dates from when, I have no idea. The Edo period perhaps.
Interestingly, the ancient Greeks also had a thing about seafood and sex.

Julian - you obviously haven't travelled on a train in the UK for some time. When I'm in London I take a train back and forth from Clapham Junction to Waterloo each day and it suffers from none of the above problems. Often overcroweded and late running, yes, but otherwise not bad at all. I also take the train to visit my parents in Cambridge fairly regularly and they are generally excellent. The Heathrow Express is also very good. On the 2 or 3 occasions recently when I've been to visit WM towers the FGW trains to Cheltenham have been very nice aswell - nothing to complain about.

I realise you were exaggerating and pretty humorous it was too but IME you'd be unlucky to experience even one of the things you mentioned on your list on the average UK train journey. The biggest problem with UK trains is still the relatively poor punctuatlity.

Yeah, I've always been satisfied with trains in the UK. They're not as good as French trains, but not too far off. Definitely better than Italian ones, though those have a certain charm.... :)
