I'd never really consider myself a trance fan.

When I think of trance I tend to think of cheesy hands in the air, whistles and glow sticks etc...

But "she" is getting quite into it lately, and telling me it's not as bad as I think. Even saying it's not too far from the likes of Lamb, Massive Attack, and even Squarepusher (all of whom I like muchio), in places.

I've often found that within pretty much every genre, there's something in it worth a listen if you dig deep enough.

So, I want to get her a couple of albums which I can maybe like myself too. Maybe something reasonably chilled, and something MOre bangin'.

    Ideas?

Oh, and I'll need to be able to pick them up in HMV today, so nothing too obscure.

Trance is the thing to dance to but not that great to listen to at home....unless you're working out on the turbo trainer which is the only time I reach for my trance compilations! There's some pretty good compilations about I think although I haven't looked at trance for years so couldn't say whats cutting edge at the moment. I don't think you can go too wrong with something a bit hippyish though. Something with a Goa vibe is usually a bit more leftfield, more of a kind of festival style. Dunno if that stuff is still about though...its probably very dated now!

Sorry...thats not much help...hopefully someone with some actual knowledge will come along soon!

I was actually expecting Paul, Julian, or Dom to have replied first.

I've heard them all mention the likes of Shpongle, Infected Mushroom, Astrix, Astral Projection, and Hallucinogen in the past. Not really sure where they fit in under the trance umberealla?
And what's their must have albums?

I know she has stuff by Hybrid and has been to see Armin Van Buuren(?) live quite a few times.

most of those you've mentioned are of the 'psy' or goa variety. very spaced out and knowing you like aphex, squarepusher, unkle etc. i'd recommend all those you've listed plus some tiesto for that anthemic hit.
the distance to goa collections are worth a look but the early ones are best.
look for ANYTHING by simon posford and to a lesser extent raja ram.
mystery of the yeti is good.
you couldd try one of the big name (ministry, gods kitchen, euphoria, tidy, cream, etc.) compilations too, they usually have a good hit of floor fillers.

personally i'm more into my hard dance and hardcore now but still have a tiesto session or chill to some posford. check out the babelicious lisa pinup.
another good source of new trance / dance stuff is dsi - a clubbing website - often dj's will post links to mp3 mixes for free download.
hybrid is good, so is way out west.
ok stream of conciousness over i'll try to think of some more....

Mo, my favourite trance label is Platipus - this is a link to one of their best ofs -

    http://www.platipus.com/albums.asp?page=albumpage2&CD=1&ID=26

Best thing is its 2 cds - 1 excellent trance and 1 excellent chill out!

The best artist album on this label is Quietman - Shush. dbl cd again.

The latest (and last) compilation is a triple CD as well! Can listen to all tracks on their web site.

For more general trancey stuff Gatecrasher or God's Kitchen compilations are generally OK.

If your missus likes Hybrid then check out the last Chemical brothers album, Venus Hum (Big Beautiful Sky) and Coldcut's last album.

    Liam.

    Thanks for the replies.

I couldn't get a single sausage from any of those mentioned above from HMV!

I'll have a listen to the platipus stuff.

Which coldcut album do you mean? Sound Mirrors? I've a couple of their albums but wouldn't have classed any of them as trance myself.

No problem Mo. I didn't mean that Coldcut were trance but just that your other half might like them if she liked Hybrid.
Yes, I did mean Sound Mirrors! Best album they've done by far.

OT here but MO , have you heard Trentemoller ; The Last Resort ? think you would like this also Richie Hawtin (Plastikman) ; DE9 Transitions. Look for the double cd of Trentemoller think it's a tenner from Fopp.

I have sound mirrors playing now. Great package with good art work and a "bonus" cd.

I was trying to think how I'd describe coldcut... i'm not sure.

BT are one I've heard mentioned but can't say I've heard any of their stuff. Shall look into them too thanks.

I just tried listening to Trentemoller, but for some reason I'm not getting any sound from my pc right now.

Funny you should mention Hawtin/Plastikman! Along with some Luke Slater, I lent her these the other night.
I've Closer to the edit, and Transitions. I'm a bit confused with what the double disk thing is with Transitions but despite him lookin a bit of a tit on the DVD, it's a great listen.
Off the top of my head I've got perhaps 5 Plastikman albums. Couldn't tell one from the other but enjoy them all.

    Ta!

I don't know if you're still looking but I can give you a few thousand recommendations if you like :)

You mentioned Hallucinogen in one of your posts which IMO is about as good as trance ever got. You could try and find his first and best album - Twisted. It's on Dragonfly records I think.
