Ive never wired a transformer before so I just want to check what Im doing. I have 6 wires; Red, Blue, Yellow, Green and 2 x Black. The two blacks are very thin so I presume they carry 12V. This is going to be a psu you for my phono amp. How do I wire this up accordingly?

you need to check the manufacturer info, transformers dont go by a set colour scheme. (the 2 black could even be a temp sensor).

The very thin wires are probably the primary winding!

the could also be high voltage winding.... depends on the current as to the required gauge. i had a sowter power tranformer for the dynaco st70 i used to have that had the high voltage winding in a thin silver litz and the lower voltage high current winding in a big gauge solid core laqcured copper that looked like coat hanger wire... you really need the wiring diagram. the supplier should have included it. if not call them up and insist! you really don't want to mis-wire that!!!!!

Did you buy it from Maplin as it looks like you have a German made transformer the colours will make sense if you think in that language.

    230v 'primary' sw=black

    12v 'secondary' rt=red ge=yellow

    the other 12v 'secondary' bl=blue gn=green
