    Alecto Upgrade

I have a pair of Alecto Mk11 Monos with an Orca preamp and am interested in this upgrade. What does the upgrade entail and what are the audio benefits?-the amps are already outstanding, so what difference does the mod make? Is it worth the outlay?

Yes its well worth the outlay, it involves fitting new fets (and extra ones) other mods too to the output stage.
A good 50% increase in preformance minimum imho.

    Alecto Upgrade

Have just found the Trichord Mod description on their Web Page-they only mention adding an additional pair of output Mosfets. Do they make other changes as well?

    have you upgraded orca supply

If you haven't and are getting the alectos done you might as well go the whole hog and never connect the orca power supply
I did last year and it's also a worthwhile mod, though not quite as dramatic as the alecto upgrade (more about timbre and detailing than emotion and soundstage-pants at describing these things!)
I didn't check with Graham exactlly what he does but if you give him a ring I'm sure he'll let you know

    Alecto Upgrade

I know it is difficult to describe, but what exactly were the benefits apart from more watts! Timing? musicality? bass? etc. How does the upgraded amp compare with other high end products?

WM(Tony) do you know any more about this mod?

does he change the mosfets and put 6 new ones in (which?) or just add 2 xtra.

And can you tell more about the n/c psu? how it works? as opposed to a conventional regulator, the website isn't very good.

    thanks, Ian

    Ian,

The N/c is simply as it is, the supply is in essence never connected to the item (Pre/dac/or digital section), it is almost totally isolated from the incoming mains, while the input caps are charging the output caps are discharging. Therefore the component never sees the incoming mains.

Its not a regulator either, is a full dc power supply from 5 to 36v and upto 4 amps, either a transformer 5v supply for clocks, or a single or dual rail configuration.
You can remove the diodes and use it as an a/c supply if you wish.
I had the first N/c prototype beta testing about 3 years ago now.
I won't use anything else, we have our own super regs if you like, even got to handle some proper current now.
I'm not prepared to go into the mods on the amp, your'll have to ask Graham ok. Wm

thanks for that Tony, I read a review on line, it basically says that, it switches in and out capacitors, so not a regulator then....hmmm interesting.

will call Graham for the alecto mods, his new amp looks interesting, eh?
