    tried some uber-speakers today...

    1) Tannoy GRF (room-corner horn loaded speaker)
    2) Horn loaded studio monitor with conventional bass units (2 x 12")
    3) Vitavox compression horn with living voice horn and horn bass unit.

    What can I say?

Wardrobe sized number 3's are coming to my house for a back-breaking, wallet crunching demo.

Only proviso is - can I get them through the door? (yes they are that big)

    :)

    cant wait.

they look a bit like this -

oh, depends on the couriers. I want to wait till the emporium are over this way doing other stuff to reduce the delivery charge.

I dont want to pay 100 quid just to demo them. If I wait till they're over near here on other business it will drop to 50.

Not unreasonable charges really though, considering the size of the beasts.

    :)

    what fun :D

    Hi Bl21dE3

Its not the exact ones, although the horn flare at the top is the same.

The immediacy and transparency is better than anything Ive heard yet full stop. No very deep bass though.

Hey Bottleneck, are you trying to outdo Merlin?

Are all the speakers you looked at S/H? I didn't think the GRF corner units are made any more.

hehehe!! thanks mate! I might just hold you to that!!

If the courier dumps them in the hall, I'll definately need some help! :D

I was thinking of asking the neighbours, but in truth I dont think they'd believe me when I said that the coffin-speakers dont have earthshattering bass levels..

ian - a long way to come just to watch jules lug them up the stairs mate!

Dev - I dont think I could hope to compete with the bass merlin gets from 2 massive subs and 3 way cone speakers. Horns are a completely different approach..

Oh yeah, forgot to add they are all very definately second hand - the Altec studio monitors for example were from the 70's. I wouldnt let the age fool you though, they were incredible.

My comment was a bit tongue in cheek, but I meant outdoing him regarding the size of the speakers not bass.

the GRF's had a smooth response, with deep bass. They have a horn behind the magnet of a big woofer, blowing through the centre of the cone. A bit like a massive dual concentric.

They were very good, but the treble wasnt as good as the other horns Id been listening too, although there was subwoofer class bass going on.

The (altec? I think?) studio monitors were the big sort that sit on top of mixing consoles. Horn loaded tweeter, and 2 x 12" bass. On first impression I liked these best of all because of all the bass, but on reflection the cone bass wasnt as tight as the more limited bass on the all horn speaker Im demoing (its emporiums own horn speaker). These werent for sale, but some could be made by a local cabinet maker and fitted up with similar drivers.

The emporium horns had the best mid and treble, and the least bass. A big room might need them mated to a sub or two, but theyd have to be lightening fast subs to stand a chance of keeping up with them.

The GRFs ruled themselves out on price/performance really.

    Chris

are the altecs the ones he advertises as 'buy them with your student loan and rent them out for parties'? - been daydreaming about them (and the nak dragon cdp he's had for a few years too but 3.5 k for a 10 year old cdp is not a bet i'm willing to take) for a while however most of the horns i've heard have been, well, bright in the treble, not something i'd like to go along with my naim amps.
    cheers

could be. There was one massive pair he showed me last time I was there that were taken out of an old cinema. Apparently they can fill the place with just a few watts!

'Emporium' really is the right word for the place.
