Been tempted with a tt for some time now but dont want to blow a stack in case I dont get on with it, but don't want a cheapie as its got to go head to head with my 2k+ dcp.

Today I have seen a Heybrook TT2 with original arm and new ortofon 10?? cart for £90. It looks like an LP12 rip off and has a fully suspended chasis and cover. I also guess if I get into it, it could be improbed upon with arm/cart/rewire not sure about motor?

I assume it will outperform a £100 prject? Its condition is ok and I reckon would come up like new with a little TLC.

    Hi

If you want to pitch stability to be close to CD quality, I'd reccomend spending a little more.

A well looked after Thorens would be a good bet. Nearer 150 though.

The emporium's got about 3 old Thorens in. I can't remember the best model numbers. Im sure someone will chip in.

There was someone on here selling one too.

I think they're great for the money.

Even that wont sound much if you dont have a decent phono stage.

    Hi,

If the Heybrook is in good nick, go for it. The Heybrook was a fine deck from the 80s. It was built like an LP12. The sound quality will beat a £100 project. I think the Heybrook arm was made by Helius. I have heard and seen these with Linn and Rega arms. £90 is a bargain. If you don't like you will get your money back on ebay.

Like a number of deck, there is a good tweak element to it. The heybrooks had a power supply option but you could fit one the power supplies on offer like the Heed/project.

The Heybrok was a very good deck, but massive improvments could be made by using the external power supply from the Hi-Fi News Accesories club. There was a version specific for the Heybrook. Check with HFNRR to see if they are still available.

If the motor is in good condition I would bet that with the power supply it would see off most of today's TT's upto £4-500.00.

Does anybody know of a good source of serviced turntables like this which are not over priced? I have been very unlucky in the past so I don't want to buy a TT from ebay.

My Project seems very hard to replace.

I'd recommend a Systemdek IIX 900 which can be had complete with RB250 / 300 for under £200-250.

They are tough as old boots a doddle to set up and spares can be had from Audio Note. There are also a number of upgrades readily available and a good one is a very nice bit of kit.

I can understand your ebay issues but if you see one within collection distance I'm sure there are a few of us here than can give you some pointers on avoiding a duffer.

Put a dynavector DV10X or goldring 1042 on one and you have a deck that will compete with decent modern decks.

Think I'm going to go for it I don't want to spend more than £100 as I dont have much vinyl, what I do have is from 17+ years ago. Will it be a pig to set up? The only one I had was part of a midi system and fully auto. A thorens at £150-180 although not sounding much is double this price.

    Hi rsand,

The Heybrook has adjustment of suspension via using an allen key on the top plate. It's not too bad to set up. It is very similar to an LP12 with a few key differences.

Have a look here for a run down of the differences.

I had a Heybrook TT2 and I thought it was to be my last turntable, it came with a Linn basik arm, gave it up for digital late 80's. A few months ago got the itch again and bought an older Thorens 125 mk11, refurbished it, new plinth, polished bearing, damping, etc. Bought a Denon DL103, and enjoying the hell out of it, much more than I ever remember. Just got my new Rega RB300 arm to replace the original arm. Great project, great music.

Used to own a Pro-ject Classic.
Very nice... but wanted an even better TT.

So after some 6 months+ of searching I got a mint LP12 off eBay, with arm, cart, etc.. for ~£500.

What? The Flutterbuster? It totally transformed my Rega :)

BTW, to my ears, my Planar 3 outperforms all the £1000ish CDPs I've heard, and a few that are more expensive; hell, even a NAD533 murders a half-decent mid-price CDP :)
