In my quest to go down a quasi tube route, what do folks think about the new tubed cd players that are coming out of china/HK, such as the

    sheng-ya CD-S10 Compact Disc Player
    http://www.shengya-audio.com/main1en.htm

or the JOLIDA JD 100 VACUUM TUBE
    REFERENCE CD PLAYER
    http://www.cattylink.com/

Seem to have a fan base in the usa.
In general, are these hybrid players just gimmicky? or do they offer something worth listening to?

    Hi Sanj

    Havent heard those 2.

Have heard 4 x Valve CDP's and 1 x valve DAC (mine hehehe).

Id expect typical valve vs solid state differences..

IE more rounded believable instruments, body and depth, but slight rolling off at frequency extremes.

Its going to vary model to model of course, and one mans meat is another mans mojo.

    :)

Don't think its in quite the same circles as those mentioned, but theres also whats basically a modded tubed version of some budget marantz players. Done by a dutch company I believe.

honestly i'm not linked to the company, but Eastern Electric also do a minimax tubed cd player. haven't heard it yet, and i have no plans to replace my wadia, but it is supposed to be pretty good. the six moons wesbite is supposed to be doing a review of it at the moment, though i'm not sure when it's supposed to be finished.

"tjoeb" i think is the name of it. supposed to be big bang for the buck. always looked slightly cheap though, imo.

I heard one. Its quite nice, about equal to the Sheng ya. It is detaild and clear with good sound stageing but its not really anything special for the money, which is about £600 I belive.
