    Just curious now...sorry about this

    re amps (or cdps apparantly)-

    can someone explain;

    are valve and tubes one and the same thing .....or possibly just related in operation?

    Just an example if I were Based in the USA I would be called American Tube Amplifiers, instead of English Valve Amplifiers.

    So I guess you have heard all American amps in your system to make that statement.Have you heard of Lamm,Air Tight,Joule Electra,Atmosphere to name a few.
    Unless you have heard these amps in your system your prejudice comments are moot.I can understand national pride but wake up and smell the roses.

    david, as I advised that other chap get a hificollective EL84 amp.

    Its the same tube as a Leak stereo 20 - but twice the power and with all new components so it won't blow up in your face.

    it's not on their site yet, call them directly.

    I don't know the Hifi Collective stuff. But if its designed by Andy Groves then it should be good.

    I would still go for a Stereo 20 and get it checked over buy a decent engineer. For one thing your more likely to make money on the amp as a classic investment especially if this is new to you you should be able to sell it quite easily.

    The whole point of choosing an amp is about what it sounds like(80% of the time) whatever amp you choose whether new, classic, second hand, or Kit. Have a listen to it first. I know its sacrilege but you might not like valves and prefer solid State.

    Nothing wrong with Chinese stuff either. I had a Cayin A-88T which is a great amp if you prefer valves, which I generally don't, so I sold it lol! But it did match perfectly to my AKG K1000 headphones.

    But, there is also a lot of stuff more affordable than that, just check out www.cattylink.com Don’t be scared to buy from them, they are great.
