I was listening to Pulp's Different Class last night and thinking how great the song Something Changed is. It really is a timeless classic up there amongst any of the great songs that get talked up as being 'The Best Song Ever Written'. Thing I can't understand is why don't songs like that get played on the radio all the time? Local radio and Radio 2 will trot out Hotel California or Sleeping Satellite every other day but there are so many great songs that you'd never hear on the radio if you listened for a year. Ok, I know why they don't get played, its because they don't please the old housewives and codgers who want to whistle along to the same old tunes but this thread is really about all the great tunes that just get forgotten. Its happening all the time aswell, lovely songs coming from nowhere and then just sinking forever. For example, that new song Mathematics by Cherry Ghost. Great song and I'd be happy to hear that instead of Wichita Lineman in the years to come but chances are it'll have its day and never surface again. Sad really.
