    This is a difficult one.

Looking at upgrading my TT I am confused to say the least. I have heard a Roksan TMS1 with SME V and thought that it was very good, but I have also seen a S/H Full Orbe (AC version) at an attractive price. On top of this I have heard great things about the Funk Firm modifications to the LP12. As a previous owner of an Export the fact that the Funked LP12 has been described as an Anniversary in disguise makes it an attractive proposition.

So any advice from forum members?

    Which is the best TT?

Does the SME V suit the TMS? If not is it easy to get another armplate fitting?

What arms suit the Orbe? Is the full Orbe better than a spider version? Is the AC version OK or should save my money for a new NC DC version?

And then the joker in the pack - the Funk Firm LP12.

Is it getting close to an Anniversary (which I heard once and fell in love with)? More importantly is it better than the TMS1 and the Orbe? As an LP12 does this mean that it should be used with a Linn tonearm?

Advice, support and guidance would be appreciated.

cant comment on the funk or Roksan but i use an SME IV on a Gyrodec with good results.
You can upgrade both the PSU and DC motor in stages with Mitchell decks.(their service ito date has been excellent)
I have had both the DC motor and HR PSU added to my standard Gyrodec.
So the Orbe may be a good punt then upgrade when funds allow.

The SME's are out of my reach :( .

I understand that the Orbe can be upgraded but is it worthwhile? If yes then I agree that it looks like a good option.

Yes, I have heard good things about the Funk Vector which is encouraging in relation to the potential of the Funked LP12 to be the business.

What exactly do you mean by the description 'high mass turntable'? Does it sound similar to the SME's or Avid's?

To what i have heard the High mass decks have a more stable sound with a deep underpinning bass.

I thing the key with SME's is with the Graham phantom arm. I have not heard an SME10 but it seems to suit SME very well.

It so difficult with record decks. why dont you let provedence choose for you - wait for a second hand deck of one of the ones you are considering to appear . If after a month or so it doesnt meet your expections sell it.

    Coops

Whats the full title of that 'TW One' player you are talking about? When I google it I get 'Tiger Woods' for some bizarre reason.

Is that the player you have currently? If so it looks great.

    Thanks

    Scott

Scott Hi, I am sure if you mention it to Nike they will make a Tiger Woods turntable! Thomas Woschnick make the TW tables the small one is the ONE and the large one is the AC , GT Audio distributes them in the UK, well worth an audition if you can, imho. Keith.

    A Loricraft treated Garrard 401?
I have had one for a year or so now and would never look back. Great value for money and it will last and last. Hard to demo though so it is feet first.

    I have owned 401 and 301 in slate also LP12 x 3
    a STD, a Transcriptors, rega3 , SP10 mk11 x2 plus a good underrated sony.

Most decks can be tuned to personal taste by arm cartridge phono stages changes
All of them blow away most CD players for me no question

    My personal order

    SP10 mk11 - Transparent midband
    LP12 variants - Beguiling
    Garrard 301 - Authoritive bass

    From what Im told

the Rock the obre and SME are also serious contenders
Also consider origin live -Ive yet to read a poor report on them

    Its not simple

It has been said . . . . though I can't concur as haven't really auditioned one properly - that a Roksan Xerxes is one of the best turntables ever made. I have a NAS Hyperspace and is the best I have heard in my system - but there is currently a NAS Dais going on e bay at a very cheap Buy now price.

Careful there. NAS used to do a model many, many years ago called the Dais, of which that is an example. The current Dais has about as much to do with that old Dais as a 1959 mini has to do with the current model ... possibly less.

Sorry to add yet more variables to the mix, I can thoroughly recommend VPI Scoutmaster (with JMW Memorial tonearm) - yes that's what I have.

Yes I should have thought of that. Very good turntables with a good range.
