what kind of breakdown should one consider on these items?
which item should take precedence and upgrade other bits later?
does any one bit of kit have a disproportional affect the sound?

General advice is the hierarchy of deck and PSU, followed by arm, followed by cart. This matches my experience. It's not necessarily about cost, however, but quality, which muddies the waters somewhat.

    ian,
wm recommended that i seek you out for advice / info regarding turntables.
i'm surprised that the cartridge doesn't feature more prominently...
the psu is important due to pitch stability i'm guessing?
i have to admit i've never actually heard a good analogue set up
