For those that don't know, Ubuntu Linux sends out discs of it's software for free

    http://www.ubuntu.com

The minimum you can order is 10 discs and delivery could take 6-8 weeks (as it did with mine!). So, for anyone interested, I've got the following discs that are surplus to requirements :

    7 x Intel x86
    1 x AMD64

All discs are v5.04 "The Hoary Hedgehog". I'm offering them on here first as Zerogain was the first place I heard of Ubuntu.

If you're interested, just PM me your name/address and I'll send on - first come, first served. This may be particularly useful to those (like me!) that are still on dial-up and so unable to download it.

    Cheers,
    batfink.

    Hi.

I've had a look through the site but can't seem to find any "minimum requirements" list. Any idea what they are?

How long have you been using it? Easy to set up and run?

I'd be interested in trying it if it will run on my machine.

    Cheers :)

Been using it for couple of months, initally on on an old machine (pentium 733, 32 meg ram,10gig hard drive, inbuilt graphics) and it worked good enough for me to want to make the switch full time (along with windoze managining to "lose " my modem drivers every time i rebooted my machine) .intial problems were getting the modem to work, and getting the extra mouse buttons to work. However with the help of the online forum all my hardware is working fine.unfortunatley some of the specialist software (read expensive) i used alot aint avaliable for linux, nor will they run under wine so i may have to reinstall windoze and dual boot :(

I'll check the minimum requirements when I get home tonight, although I would imagine they are similar to Debian.

I haven't been able to use it yet - my current PC is a PC World special (Advent laptop) from about 5 years ago (Celeron 400) which uses mostly generic hardware that is tailored to Windoze. I successfully managed to use older versions of Redhat/Mandrake a couple of years ago, but only after a lot of effort.

The installation/setup process is easy to use. My laptop has always struggled to successfully run X, so I think this is where my problem lies.

I'm intending building myself a new PC at some point over the next couple of months and I will ensure I use Linux compatible hardware. Hopefully one day I can completely ditch M$ software :)

I think these are the links you are seeking.

    MO!,
The ubuntu wiki contains all sorts of useful information and on the second page under the heading of Basic Installation you will find links to HardwareSupport and SupportedArchitectures.

Very little is given as "minimum requirements" on the CDs - all you need is at least 32MB of RAM and around 1.8Gb hard disk space for a full installation.

A "Live" CD is included with each copy - this allows you to demo Ubuntu before going through the full install process. I've had limited success with these in the past and due to everything running from CD, they run much slower than a complete installation. Ubuntu suggest a minimum of 128Mb Ram to run the live CD.

    ..........and discs recieved!

    Many thanks Batfink :)

However...... I'm not having much joy. I've had ongoing problems with the machine that I've tried it on, and hoped I'd have MOre luck with this.

    In breif...

The hdd was on its way out so I bought a new 160GB sata drive, with a controller card to allow it to be used on my ide only MObo.
For some reason I was unable to install my copy of xp pro onto that drive. It kept getting down to 2min's left, then nothing would happen. So eventually, following advice from here, I used a drive cloner to copy the failing drive over to the new one. Simple enough and kinda worked, but the machine ran slow, froze often, and took ages to boot up.

So, I arsed about trying to fix it, and it's now pretty much dead :D

I tried installing Linspire, but that didn't work.

And have just tried Ubuntu. Seemed to go fine....

I've now got a screen saying...

    Creating ext3 file system for / in partition #1 of SCSI1 (0,0,0)
    (sda)...

And it's not progressing beyond 0%

    :(

    Anyone?

Thanks. I've been searching the forums and seems to be quite a few people having problems with controller cards, but not much in the way of answers/solutions.

....sorry - I can help with supplying the discs, but I'm nowhere near techie enough to help solve any problems ;) .

There are many Linux forums out there though (including the Ubuntu ones), so just ask the questions and I'm sure someone will help out!
