You're wrong about a mortgage mate. City got Eastlands in exchange for Maine Road and all the gate receipts over 35000. Keegan spent the millions that we now owe. How many of his purchases are in the first team?

Wardle's always harping on about the debt being a mortgage to pay for all the assorted bits. The seats, the refreshment areas, the branding etc. Apparently that all came to nigh on 40 million. That's how I understand it anyway. One of my mates works for the accountants that do the books, our big problem is wages, the year before last they were so high we made a big loss due to buying players and paying top dollar wages, then crashing out vainly in Europe

most of the £17m was spent paying of the overdraft, the rest was wasted by souness. All in all we were a much better team with Duff playing.

I was pissed off that Gerard changed his mind, will his staying really make that much difference? £35M or so could have brought 4 bloody good overseas players to Liverpool and I understand Benitez was looking at exactly that kind of thing.

So what happens now? Do Liverpool keep the same limited team as last season? If so, I can't see why Gerard is going to be any happier this time next year.

As AOS said it is agents that 'move' players, sometimes the club may persuade the agent to help! If a player does not want to join a club it would be fairly simple for he and his agent to arrange a failure of the interview.
Scott Parker was probably the last player to join Chelsea believing that a big fee and a big salary guarantees first team selection. Mateja Kezman believed that his talent would suffice, sadly his previous form was not matched at Chelsea and he left too. I would have liked both players to have stayed and solved Mourinho's quest for a striker and a midfielder.

Any team is a better team with Duffer playing! Blackburn clearly had a choice to make; sell Duff, sell several players or keep paying the interest on the overdraft - they made the right choice and are still in the Premiership. As for Souness ... :newbie:

Good point, that money on top of the Champions League prize money could have really strengthened the Liverpool squad. But, he is obviously the heart of the Liverpool team and as such is more likely to be worth £35m to them than as just a versatile midfield alternative to Lampard/Makalele for Chelsea.

But Mr Gerrard and Liverpool's unexpected European triumph has helped to prove, along with the transfer activity so far this Summer, that the premise of this thread is wildly incorrect:
Chelsea cannot buy whoever they want, and money cannot guarantee success.

Chelsea are rich, they might be successful and supporters of other 'massive' clubs will be jealous!
    :p :D ;)

Lord, we didnt want to sell him but he had clause in his contract which was activated at £17m. The trust fund was going to sort the overdraft but instead they thought it better to use the Duff money and keep the fund for a rainy day (read; they didnt trust Souness and wasnt sure of prem survival). Due to Souness being a complete arse no funds are being released this season, so the £13m he had at the start of last season still applies, that leaves Hughes with about £5m. Still, at least we dont owe anything.
