My G'house ended up all blackgated and really sang, the Loftin White is a different thing all together, only 4watts with a beautiful open and detailed sound and a large soundstage, I prefer it to the 300b,

my current project is a 45 SE which is supposed to be better than the 2A3, only 2 watts but who cares

That is Nick G's if I'm not mistaken. A lovely sounding amp, though I haven't heard it for a while since I moved daan sarf so I'm sure its even better now. They're mercury vapour rectifiers like on the elecronluv amps- 1200V is too much for normal rectifiers to handle properly which makes flash over likely- a very scary thing with those volts. Nick was telling me that at those voltages even the ceramic valve base can conduct if you get a problem. Eeep

Bottleneck: No I tried crossing a valve amp with an espresso machine, believe me the result ain't as pretty as that :) I ruined a perfectly good espresso machine too- thought it wasn't worth anything as I couldn't find the coffee pods anywhere, checked a month or so later and suddenly they're everywhere- could have got 600 notes for the thing on ebay:mad:

Shame on you Anex, espresso machines come in pump or lever but not pods...

Meh it was free- a place I worked at didn't even know they had it anymore so I inherited it. Made some pretty decent coffee actually as it was a proper pro job but designed for offices for some reason, there is one on a microsoft or IBM or something ad atm

You need to host the pictures on some web space or an online personal album and then link to them in your post.

This place is good, has lots of capacity and is free:

    Thanks Rob - Pax ;)

This is the amp I will take to bottlenecks, my SS SET competitor. Only power supplies fitted so far.

Problem - it is so boring, shall I glue some milk bottles in it with LED's inside :D http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m10/nenevalleyaudio/SETcomp.jpg

I still can't seem to make it appear as a picture.

Richard, on the photobucket site, just below your image, copy the text in the IMG box and paste it directly into your post.
No need to use IMG buttons on ZG.
The picture will then show at full size.

I find their description of the sound of conventional DC heating to be very accurate. Dry, flat and colourless is what I hear. Trouble is, with very sensitive loudspeakers most ac heated SE amplifiers hum too much. The Tentlabs filament supplies have given me the best results to date. Has anyone else tried them?

Some people biamp using a 45 amp for the treble and a different one for bass. The 45 is meant to be exquisite for treble, I believe.

Now it's hearing stuff like this that makes me very nervous about using 845 SET's (run at 1250v apparently). This, coupled with the fact that they're shoddy Chinese designed/manufactured amps with very limited QC, makes me wonder if I should really be using them at all.

But they just make such a wonderful sound for £800....

Yes I was just thinking about that actually, not sure how they get away with it- could be to do with lower current draw- what output are the amps quoted as? I'd guess 20W but your probably only getting around 15? I think Nick's amp actually gives him 20 useable watts so that could be the difference. I shall find out and post back. But yes, that has always put me off tbh, something a bit smaller perhaps but the fact you can buy amps with 805's, 845s, 211s etc. on ebay for a few hundred quid seems a little worrying. I'd expect to pay more than most of them cost for the mains Tx alone really.

love the little glass chimneys! :)

how do you find the KR valves? I notice they do a range, including 300b.
