Might be buying a Nait 3, does not have the phono board but my dealer gets them in from time to time, used of course. Would an outboard phono unit such as a Musical Fidelity or Project Phono Box work and sound just as well as the internal board or shall I go the internal route?

At that level of external stage I'd go with a set of Naim cards.
    They are excellent.

Ok, but any recommendation for a cheap phono preamp till he gets the cards in?? Audio-technica? Nad? Project phono box? Bellari? Rega Phono-Mini? Rote? Cambridge? vincent?

All of the above would be considered depending upon the "synergy" with the Nait.

Can't go wrong with the Cambridge.
540P is MM while the 640P is MM/MC.

A good phono stage applies EQ to a precise degree (RIAA), has low noise and low distortion. The CA units easily satisfy on all counts and as such, questions of synergy don't arise.

Well, now I am thinking about a Rega Phono mini. Between that or a set of boards...
