I've been lurking here for a while and never got round to Introducing myself. Been into hifi, or more realistically music for over 35 years. Unfortunately I've recently had a stroke and would not dare cue an album. It may be time for my vinyl collection to go, I am wondering about the best way to sell 3000 or so albums. Most played on only good gear (first tt a transcriptors/3009). The music is practically all roots based. Not one record by a rock group, no synthesizers' or drum machines if I could help it 100s of reggae, African, old soul, jazz, blues , 50s Rnb and loads of plain odd. Every record till around 1990 by Waits, Thompson, Lovett, Cooder, Van, Rickie Lee Jones. Lots extremely rare/collectible if not worth serious money. I've worked all over Europe and used to spend Saturdays wondering round cities looking for interesting bars and record shops. 10 King Sunny Ade Nigerian pressings anyone? Paid 20 p each? A foot of Lee Perry?

I don't have the time or inclination to spend the rest of my life dealing with Ebay. Would it be reasonable to post the list here and say put a minimum purchase of say 20. ( I'd post a few first so quality could be checked) . These LPS have been trucked around Europe in cardboard boxes so a lot of corners are worn. I can now type with difficulty so I can't see me writing much descriptions. I was possibly thinking of a buy 20 of your choice and I'll throw in another 10 of similar musical types but better music as my musical tastes have taken me to the more obscure areas of roots music where most musicians would not exactly be well known

Any ideas people? I don't want to sell the lot to a dealer.

    Cheers

    Geoff

Firstly welcome to the forum. Hope the condition relating to your stroke improves dramatically and soon, maybe then you might be able to cue a record? so maybe your album s are worth keeping?

An alternative to Ebay and Listing your collection wholesale on here, might be a "private" list as a word document, which could be sent to interested buyers.

If thats the route you choose to take, then I would be interested in receiving such a document.

    Regards

    Andy

I'd be interested in a substantial 'lucky dip'.

    Still in hospital

Thanks for the replies .Still in hospital so not much happening yet.

I like the idea of 'lucky dips' - a challenge?

    5 soukous 1980-83

    10 chicago blues 45-50

All LPs with Charlie Haden on bass not on his name.

    10 SA jazz

    Favourite drinking albums(amos Milburn etc)

20 ska albums with the tracks about 'Rudy' (Message was one of many) etc.

I'll easily be able to sell th 'names' and the Studio 1s, Blue Notes etc. It'/s finding a way of getting rid of equally good unknown stuff.

I'd be happy to select a 10 or so LP 'sampler' in genres for which I have many more examples on request.

I'll update this post when I can

    Cheers

    Hi Charlie,

Sorry to hear about your stroke.

I too would be interested in your records. I too may be interested in buying the whole amount or big chuncks of it. I am very interested in the soul, R&B, reggae, ska stuff, blues.

How to get rid of how?

The best way is to list them with as much detail as possible. Title, artists, vinyl condition and sleeve condition as standard. Info such label and catalogue number can be added as well. Matrix numbers can help to boost the price on some records. This is time consuming but it can get you more money.

If you put them on Ebay as seperate records than some may go for good money and other may not. Some may not even sell.

If you put them on Ebay as a collection, in most cases you will not get as much as selling as seperates but it's less hassle. To get good money on Ebay, you need to list the items with as much detail as possible.

Rare records can go well on Ebay with good descriptions and good photos. Also shipping worldwide can help with sales as well.

Selling to a dealer wont give you big money but is an easy option. Some shops may cherry pick the best items and may not take the rest.

A list on this forum is a excellent option. It allows you to set the price. Again some of the records may not sell. This would be the easy way to do it. Check on popsike to see the sort of prices the rarer stuff can go for.

The pot luck/ lucky dip option sounds fun. I'll have a dabble with that.

    Good luck with whole thing.

Geoff, where are you based? If Dean was reasonably close to you, I'm sure quite a few people on this forum would trust him to work out 'lucky dips' of, say, 50 or 100 albums each with you and buy them sight unseen. If Dean says the price is okay, I for one would be happy to pay it. Same goes for Andy and Paul for me.

I realise that you are in a quandary - getting the most money for the least work. Why not take out the 100 or 200 most valuable records and sell them individually on eBay, and then sell off the rest in job lots as per the above.

    Don't get too excited...

    Hi people

I'm currently in a rehabilitation centre in Switzerland for some time to come. I'll thn go back to Galway in Ireland where the first priority is keeping the missus happy and learning to walk again. It will take an age to catalog all these. Is there some DB where you type in details and it finds the rest? It's worth buying a bar code scanner if it would help.

At least there's a lot of interest for one afternoon Apart from a few 50 quid ones I should be able to at least only deal with one place

Nothing will probably start before Xmas realistically.

    Cheers

Geoff....discogs HERE will find a lot of records for you and then all you have to do is add them to your collection online and you can export that list to excel. I'll be back and forth to Galway in the next year or so if you fancy a pint!

Well, if the lucky dip lots of 50 gains momentum, I'd like to bung my hat into the ring as well.
    Get well soon.
