The tube swapped out is the one on the right at the output:

That looks like the version I found but with the cathode bypass and input caps deleted and HT filtering for the input tube.

It would be interesting to know if the DC around the output tube changes when you change the tube.

    great thread Rob.

I've always found valve changes subtle, but differences are there for sure.. but less so in power tubes. I'm not sure why that is however (?)

This is the very same rubber glove that I used to switch on my valve amplifier for the first time after building it :)

i know i'm boring but any test of modern production ecc83s should include sovtek 12AX7 LPS - it's different due to spiral filaments and very thick glass. the sound is way way beyond its price plus it's extremely reliable.

The Edicron in Rob's test is a rebadged Sovtek LPS, it's my tube and is identical to the cryo'd Sovtek LPS currently in my amp. It's a great tube in the phase splitter position in my Prologue 2, I can't find anything to beat it in the bass / timing areas.

Yes, and does it here too IMO - compares very well with the Telefunken and Mullard.

One test I didn't perform was for microphony. Would have been useful perhaps.
