Am considering changing my JC PV-10 pre for either an Audion valve pre (as I have Audion power amps) or one of the S & B variety passives.

Assuming volume pots have a reasonable impact on sound quality, the advantage of the passive ISTM is a higher quality volume control. Now the Audion AFAIK has an Alps Blue pot.Are pots generally replaceable and if so any suggestions for a top quality example.

    Thanks
    Jeff

Alps have a good rep, well the alps blue does. Panasonic are meant to be good.
Noble aswell, although i tried a Noble and found it to sound rather slow and uninvolving.

I would suggest either a stepped attenuator. Or using a fixed resistor of the same value as the pot, put this direct in the signal in line, and then use the pot as a potential divider to ground. I have just done this tweak with a bulk film resistor and it beats the pants off my previous stepped attenuator, and is rather cheaper.
