views on this turntable? what is a fair price for a mint example with the jmw 9 arm?
Seen this on the bay too. Very nice TT and very keenly priced (£1495 rrp?). Never heard one, but I'd buy it on looks and VPI's reputation alone. DT
Price is way off unfortunately - mine was for sale for £850 and still never moved. Sound wise, the Scout is great, it simply plays music without the somewhat mechanical presentation of the Michells. Best described as a Rega with bass and imaging
From what I've heard I think they are excellent. Particularly impressed with the quality of arm they put on. Also, the quartz-locked power supply option that you can look at later gives an upgrade path...
so where can they be found for 850????? that starts sounding particularly interesting! any recommendation on cartridges? was thinking of a music maker (not just because it's also on epay!!!) then i could use a simpler phono stage...
droool... I think Merlin said that he had sold his for £850 used (but I might be wrong). I personally have been looking for a second hand VPI but was thinking more in terms of the Scoutmaster. I think you can get them for a discounted price of about £1200 new (Scout). Problem is they don't come up often second hand, as they are American. I personally have not heard one but again, they have good reviews and look nice. JJ
Tony, If you can get a WT for £1K then I would be most impressed! I never sold my Vpi, still here and I decided to keep it in the end. My suggestion for buying used would be to get one from Audiogon. Yes I know they are US models and work on 110v but bear with me. Don't just buy the Scout, buy the SDS as well. This works on any voltage and outputs a regulated 110v. You should be able to get the two for $2K with something like a DV20XH fitted, so a total cost including taxes is likely to be around £1,300. Bear in mind the SDS retails over here for £1K alone and really does improve the performance in every area. For many, the Scout with SDS will outperfom the Scoutmaster anyway. Just me tuppence.
So the only problem with a VPI, it seems, is that it's impossible to shift them secondhand when you fancy a change ;-) -- Ian
An astute observation Ian ;-) I was going to upgrade to the Super Scoutmaster. Rather glad I didn't now - the speakers made a huge difference and I stumbled upon a damned good CD player! Now if I fancy a change, I have rather made it difficult for myself don't you think?
Changing the speakers will help you enjoy every music medium you put through them - and it seems to me that it was the best thing to change. That is to say it'll improve LP aswell as CD... once you plug the thing in!
Back with a new improved and extra strength set of my beloved Merlins Ian. Like ATC's only with valves. Open day soon once the Vpi is back up and running on a new rack. The VSM is a very special loudspeaker.
TT now sitting on floor hooked up to amplifier with patch cords and playing music. We really must have a music evening soon. Diaries to the fore -who fancies listening to some of Ian's music on a system comprising assorted american imports that no one has ever heard of?
Well, I'm up for it, obviously. Doesn't have to all be my music, you'll probably get more takers if it isn't How about a Saturday or Sunday in the next 2 or 3 weeks? -- Ian
