Chaps - can I have your input....

I've been offered a Teac VRDS25 tranny. Thing is I can get a VRDS10 for half the cost. Is the 25 that much better? What's the big difference? I've heard whispers the mechanism may be different. The 25 also looses the nice white buttons, unfortunately. (It's for a benchmark dac1). Thanks...

25 (player)is a better unit has the later CMK 3.2 mech inside, which can be upgraded to the sold platter at a later date.
Gives a sold image and good focus and a richer texture than most cdp's should help out the benchmark well (even though transports make no difference  )
There's a nice P30 on hifi for sale Paul, very good transport about £1100 fair price too. Wm

Wm, thanks. The price of the 25 tranny is no big deal, so I thought I'd get it for cosmetic and peace of mind reasons. Not sure if it will make any difference to the dac1 though.

Are they well made? What if it goes wrong? Can you get spare lasers or mechanical bits? Best place for a service?

    Thanks...

Spares are no hassle at all, laser are no probs either, I know of 2 or 3 people thaty keep them in stock as well ourselves.
I have a wadia 20 same mecho 10 years going very strong no probs at all.
Very little goes wrong, jap build quality, Teac imho make the best mass produced transports you can get.
Certainly help with the thinness of the dac1 for sure and with help it in the vocal dept too.
Plus later you can fit one these

What is that? I don't know what the standard one look like inside. If your suggesting an upgrade, how much is it and what benefits are there?

In light of the upgrade costs, is it better value to look at a better Teac, or even wadia? Bear in mind I'll be paying only £600 for a 25.

I bought a VRDS-10 not too long ago for about £300 'BUT', it has had every modification possible and offered by Audiocom International, was sold by the original owner, original box, manual, receipt and service bills (this baby was absolutely pampered).

Just goes to show what you can get for your money if you look carefully.

The 25 is a player and allows you to to use its internal DAC for other Digital inputs - so if you have a DAB you could use the Digital input of the 25.

I'll be using the benchmark dac1 anyway. That also accepts other inputs too.

The Benchmark will sound more detailed and open, however the teac is more natural.
Make sure the Dac1 has a decent power to it, only way to extract it reasonable preformance from it.

I thought it was best to use the supplied power lead with the dac1?

Well Paul, once your got set up and rolling, then maybe you could try some, and tell us about the results for your.
ON both my dac 1's (If I can find the stock one lol!!), the performance of them is enhanced by the use of Quality mains input.

Ok. I'm going to look at this 25 on sunday. The guy has it boxed up and apparently it's mint, so I'm sure it'll be coming home with me.

Japanese spec VRDS25 is better (it weighs 10kgs more than the export version, so obviously sounds 10x better). Even better is the VRDS50, which because it is a 50 rather than a 25 is twice as good as the (domestic) VRDS25.
Sadly the VRDS50 was never exported (too heavy, probably). Fortunately, I happen to have one :D

Maybe I sould pop a concrete paving slab on top as an upgrade. I may also save up for a second slab. Something to look forward to next pay day.

Ordered a dac1 earlier, so the ball is now rolling.

Do you guys have a preference for tranny isolation? Thinking townshend seismic sink, or audiophile base? Will be going inside oak furni - so no spikes!

    Paul,

I use a seismic sink under my CDp to good effect, there's also the voodoo air platform from airtek, made from wood but same principle.
