Looking to get all the boxes wall mounted, Cyrus are half width so three shelves would do. There are plenty of individual supports but getting three in a straight line and equidistant (so they look right) seems like it might be tricky. Apollo do a two shelf unit for TT's and there is always the dedicated (ie not inexpensive) Cyrus rack, but would still need a full width platform as well. A single book shelf is possible but the boxes are deeper than books....

So has anyone found a solution that works?

I made some myself and the weight of the Bel Canto hasn't brought them down (yet):

For any of us guys with sheds and the desire to build then making your own rack would be a very fulfilling way to go ;)

I do know that Something Solid who specialise in stands and racks will also make custom items for you too, might be worth giving them a call. Contact details are:

    Mark Orr 07801 088333

You can tell him that Craig (ex Audiobahn) refered you if you like ;)

You can pick up Target wall mounted TT platforms for next to nothing on Ebay.

NB, there are 2 sizes ! Standard size, and a huge one.

Had been looking at the Something Solid supports here: Noteworthy

Also, Target no longer seem to be made, see here: Apollo at Walrus
So ebay supply may start to dry up.

My DIY efforts tend towards the hugely over engineered, Matt's shelves (nice) would have far more timber and several cross braces I fear. I put in some hanging space for clothes in our previous flat and it took me three days to remove it when we moved out.

    Keep the suggestions coming.

    Thanks

search "target" in 'consumer electronics' ignore all the metal detectors and crap like that.

I bought 2 standard size ones for 25-30 quid each and the huge one for 40 I think.

Matt - have you used hollow vertical pipes to hide the cabling?

    It looks very neat.

Noteworthy work very closely with Something Solid, they are great fans of the products and are logistically very close to where the racks etc. are made.

Either would be good places to start to talk to someone about custom racks.

I am currently looking into a business opportunity that has come my way supplying unique granite and precious stone products. This coincides nicely with my own desire to have a wall-mounted turntable shelf as I will be designing a metal frame structure that can take a piece of granite as the shelf material.

Maybe (and it's only a BIG maybe at the moment), if the design comes off and the new business project is something that will work for me then I can provide granite shelves or slabs to ZG members at cost?!

    ;)

Hmmm. Have a look at this thread at HiFiPlus re: granite

As Markus posts here as well this comment of his will give you a flavour:
'At the risk of repeating myself, granite is crap for audio use. Slate is much better but also much more expensive.'

My deck is currently sat on black limestone which looks like slate but is a lot cheaper. Haven't compared sound with anything else, but what it has told me is that a stone shelf is heavy.

    Do keep me posted though.

yep, i was unfortunate enought to try granite, it realy was a bad move. I now have slate and it is way way better.

They are plastic drainpipes (the thinner brown ones you can buy in B&Q for water butts etc) - cut them to size (easy to cut), cut a 'mousehole' on the one by the amp (for the wires to escape) and then paint them up. The top one holds itself in place between the two shelves, the lower one sits on a bracket down behind the TV cabinet. You have to send a string down to pull up the power cables - not too difficult.

I painted them and the shelves a slightly darker shade (of the same colour) than the walls and it seems to work well - it really higlights the silver gear.

Each shelf has supports screwed through the dry-lining into the brickwork and the larger shelf has those additional not pretty but strong galvanised steel wall brackets - it might have coped without them but that amp is mighty heavy and I don't want it crashing onto the TV (which is now a plasma)!

The shelves themselves are 15mm MDF - thickest I could find for the size I needed. Primed and then rollered in egg-shell paint (pretty resiliant). The shelves are screwed into the supports.

Do they sound as good as a proper/traditional metal hifi stand? No idea - most probably not but I needed them in the corner and up out of the way of little hands so the bespoke route was the way to go.

    Matt.

As we are on the subject, has anyone hung their plasma ?

Mine is on a massive aluminium stand, which looks rank.

I'm a big fan of wall mounting so my advice would be to go for it.

I use two Target wall shelves picked up for around £30-35 s/hand

Not only does it help with vibration/resonance issues, especially if you have a floating wooden floor like I do, but it allows you to get the system up high, away from kids and much easier to use.

Here's an old photo of my setup (now quite different)

I've not loked for a while, but I used to search for "rack" and "stand" then after selecting all catagories, search in consumer electronics. There's usually a few on there.
