    Funkadelic and Parliment.

    Fav albums?

Who else should I be looking at?

Not bothered about getting what's considered essential in terms of the history and such. Just gimme the good shit! The rest can follow.

Funkadelic? - gotta get 'Maggot Brain'! Also recommend 'Funkadelic Live - Meadowbrook, Rochester, Michigan 1971' - recorded (IIRC) a year after Maggot Brain and worth it for the live version of Maggot Brain alone.

I've got 'Uncle Jam Wants You' and 'Ultimate Funkadelic' (compilation), both of which are OK, but not their best apparently. I also have 'First Thangs' by Parliament which is an amalgamation of their first album plus a load of extra tracks, and I LOVE IT! It's about as varied an album as you're likely to find, with funk, gospel and even a bit of country and western (well GC's take on C&W anyway). Buy it, it's fantastic. In fact, that reminds me that I must buy some more Parliament forthwith.

On a similar vein, get some Sly and the Family Stone - 'Stand' and 'Life' are both excellent, 'There's a Riot Goin' on' is also very good but more laid back.

    Hi,

My favourite Funkadelic album is the killer, "One nation under a groove". The title track was a dancefloor monster in the late 70s. It was one of the biggest tracks in the discos in 1978. I still remember the dance!

Try The Parliments album "Mothership Connection" an excellent album full stop.

There are plenty of compilation about featuring these two acts.

There are tons of quality funk stuff around.

    Start with the Master. James Brown. There are many best of ofs which cover all aspects of his career. His studio albums are many in number. A number of these are patchy. Ones I would recommend include the following;

    In the Jungle Groove
Foundations of Funk - A brand new bag 1964 -1969
Funk Power 1970: A brand new thang
Make it Funky - The big Payback 1971 -1975

The first album is a excellent toe dipper into the Godfather's funk stuff. The next three albums cover his funk years from early stuff, through a monster period to the mid 70s.

As for studio or live albums, I would look at "The Payback", " Hell", "Sex Machine" and "Love Power Peace".

Other funk bombs include stuff by the Meters. Try "Look Ka-Py Py" & "Rejuvenation". Both are excellent albums. Again there are many compilation to be had.

Also look at "Dyke and the Blazers". They were one of the first true funk acts and the first to release a record with the word funky in the title. "So Sharp" or We got more soul" both cover most of his recordings.

These should get you going. The are plenty more.

    Thanks for the replies :)

I've had access to a decent collection in the past through one of my brothers. Now I'm down to just a couple of best of albums.

I'd rather have the actual albums rather than best of and compliations. Guess I'll keep an eye out for what's going cheap or turns up on ebay :)

Wouldn't argue with any of the recomendations so far. Best Parliament album - Mothership Connection no question.

Funkadelic is OK but maybe more show than go - generally they don't live up to the promise of their great album titles IMO.

James brown yup. Try the Payback, Funk Power 1970 and In the Jungle Groove. Especiually if you're a bit bored of his overplayed hits.

Meters. Oh yes. Both albums are essential.

The Temptations Psychedelic Soul. One of my all time favourites and I do like Funk!

And in a more laid back style: Expansions by Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes and The World is a Ghetto by War. Heaven.

And did I say The Temptations? Psychedelic Soul. The coolest of cool records from the coolest era in music. Go buy.

Try The JB's Food for thought or pretty much anything by them, James Brown is heavily involved but not singing. My favorite funk band.
