Anybody got any suggestions? Norton keeps on telling me that I have the Welchia worm on my computer at home. So I installed the patch and ran the symantec removal tool. This told me there were no worms found on the machine and after restarting everything went back to normal. This morning Norton tells me it's back. Is there something the matter with Norton or am I going to have to do something else? I'm at a dead loss. Apart from the fact Norton appears to be permanently crashing at the moment the machine works fine, but I obviously don't want to give a worm a home. Any IT wizards who can help would be gratefully recieved.

    Are you using a firewall?

Is Windoze patched up to date?

    Ditch Norton.
Go and try Trend Micro House Call.

Once you have go rid of the virus, Install Trend micro Anti-virus.

    Norton is nothing but hassle.

Unless you have a firewall or update your Windows with the latest security updates Norton (or any other anti-virus software) can't prevent the Welchia worm from re-infecting your system.

As for Norton anti-virus, I've never had a problem with it for the 3-4 years I've been using it.

No firewall, what's one of those?

Thought I'd patched the computer, but am confused why Norton says I've got it when the killer says I haven't

For a firewall, download Zone Alarm from Zone Labs. Amongst other things, it will stop worms from acting as servers or sending your data out across the net. It will also quarantine dodgy email attachments and force you to think hard before opening them.

Use Windows Update regularly to check for patches.

As for the disagreement over welchia, it may be that the files are gone but there are remaining keys in the registry which Norton is picking up on. Or something along those lines.

It filters all network traffic in and out of your PC. It stops traffic on any port where you haven't given specific permission for that traffic to occur. It makes your PC disappear to port probes. It allows you control over which applications can access the net and which ones can act as servers (generally only Messenger or file sharing programs would fall into the latter category). If an application that hasn't previously been given permission (like a worm) tries to access the net, the firewall will stop it and ask you if it's OK. You can then say yes or no and have it remembered (or not) for next time.

Most firewalls have a few other bells and whistles too, like looking for dodgy email attachments.

Once you've told it about each of your applications, it just sits there in the background getting on with the job.

As Zone Alarm is a good product and is free for personal use, there really is no excuse :)
