    6mm is approaching fairly serious.

Have you done any welding before ?

MIG is easiest, (PhD welding, press here dummy) but you need a bottle of gas which you will have to rent from BOC or Air Products.

ARC welding is more difficult for an ameturer (but not impossible), you just buy a rectifier and a packet of electrodes.

Have you any budget in mind ?

Yes, I've done welding but it was a long time ago as part of a the Diploma in Horticulture I did when I started out.

ie back in 1988, as a peripheral part of the course.

I remember the basics but safe to say i'm well rusty on the subject (excuse posssible pun).

If I want to do this I guess i'm going to have to talk to a local college of fe about an evening class, rather than going at half cock!?

    Budget?

Can you (safely) get stuff (possibly s/h) for less than a fortune....I think i wouldn't want to sink more than £100-200 into it. What amounts are involved?

I would say this is not something for QUITE yet......I've just recovered from a bust back at xmas.....have a bit of catching up to do....(lost Jan totally!)

The welding I did was Arc (two big crock clips a long rod + lots of sparks??) and gas.

Well, thats how I remember it anyway!

    The plot is this;

Ive been doing quite alot of audio tweaking in the last 12 months....I DON'T make £30000/ year , so if i want my kit to sound better Ive got to experiment a bit....vidration damping etc.

I was over pete ks place the other day, was very impressed with his speaker stands, so I thought I'd ahve a go at making some my self!!!

    Plot revealed.

The thought is in the backof my mind, if I get the sounding (+ looking) good, to have a go at selling.

There is a business plan there, just bear in mind, once you have bought all the materials the next cost is you.

The danger (rough figures) metal say £30, welding rods, paint and consumables £10, you spend 10 hours making them, sell them for £100, therefore you worked for £6 per hour, not to mention that you have to absorb all the initial high costs.

Not trying to knock and idea, but just think it through.

My mate has had hundreds of business plans, not one of them has ever made him any money and now he is in debt up to his neck.

What happend to Target ??? They had lots of products at very palletable pricces...

    True enough.

    Thankyou for that.

It most CERTAINLY is a case of " don't give up your day job"....which I have no intenton of doing.

This is an instance of an enthusiast doing it for a bit of fun; try making up a few, see if a good set will e bay. ( i really was quite taken aback by the difference betwen my stands and Petes, highly surprised.......I feel theres is potential there)

I have no doubt to start with there will be losses, certainly to start with.........called a learning curve!!

AS I say this doesn't have to earn my my income...to start with its a look-see. An experiment

    Thanks again.

.....i'm aiming more at stuff people can't put down, rather than affordable.........but, as you correctly say, it remains to be seen.
