Why is everything so bl@@dy awful in this world!? Food manufacturers stuffing crap into their products that have no nutritional benefit but increase chances of heart disease by frightening levels:

Why aren't trans fats illegal? WHY?

There was just something on the news about sharks in UK waters, and one expert says some sharks populations around here are down 90% in recent years due to being killed in fishing nets - not to mention fish stocks almost being wiped out by overfishing.....STOP KILLING EVERYTHING!

The other day some bloke was saying that they reckon that the Amazon rainforests could be effectively gone within 50-100 years or less.

Israelis et al acting like compete @rseholes and seemingly the whole middle east bracing itself for yet more war and suffering.

And don't start me on global warming or the good ol' US-of-bl@@dy-A.
Where's the good news? Someone cheer me up, I'm feeling depressed by it all.

When I was at school they said that the rainforests had 30 years left, that was 20 years ago

They said that coal would be gone by now as well, and that was if we went at current consumption back then. Consumption must have trebled since then.

There is plenty to be sad about but don't believe some of the hype, there is plenty of Oil left and global warming would be occurring if we were here or not, if we could magically stop all carbon emissions today, it would make sod all difference.

You have a very very simple choice when it comes to rubbish food, don't buy it. If you cant be arsed to cook from fresh then stop moaning.

Other than that, the sun is shining, its the weekend, and through many thousands of years of humans on earth we discovered a way of fermenting fruits and barley so that it makes your head wobble. If you don't want to do this borrow someones dog and go for a long walk.

yeah, it's very scary - seems like no one (no who can possibly change things anyway) give a damn about future generations of mankind...

but it's also a consumers market and people wouldn't be too happy if they were able to get their usual items of food everyweek and lkoads of food (i.e. fruit and veg etc) is wasted because it doesn't loook right - I actually prefer the more natural look of strawberries for example... :)

As far as I know trans fatty acids can't be broken down by the body.

It's OK, my momentary ...er.. moment of morosity has now partially passed. It's friday, and I have finished all my weeks work (well all I'm prepared to do) so it's officially the weekend. Bit early for my first beer, but I'll put a 4-pack in the fridge for later.

Still, it's a shame we can't act for the good of the planet sometimes. I know we all have freedom of choice to buy whatever food we see fit, but it still seems a shame that producers don't seem to want to make healthy or responsible food products, just as much cash as poss. We have an allotment and nearly all of our veg is only minutes old when it goes in the pot, so I'm lucky in that respect.
Did anyone read that article about some Americans (and presumably others) being so fat that x-rays are unable to penetrate their flab?
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/5219884.stm

I realise we humans might be living longer, it's the rest of the worlds ecosystem we need to think about.

because we are a capitalist society who's only interests are to make as much money as possible and to screw over as many people as possible. Not something I subscribe to I hasen to add.

When I first hear the "tran fat" on the radio, I thought they said something else, but then I was 1/2 asleep.

    lee,
spot on mate - capitalism is totally unsustainable in the long run. i don't subscribe to socialism as an alternative either - there has to be some way of encouraging and rewarding people without the ghost of gordon gecko laughing at us all from hell....
huge tax breaks on ethical conduct (enough to ensure that litegious american stock holders don;t get all tortey if they think their dividends might be effected) would be a start but then who judges what is ethical?
    cheers

Lets have a joke to cheer us up!

Dave goes into the pub. His friends see he is on his own and ask him where is wife is.
'She died of vd,' he answered.
'But no one dies of vd these days,' they exclaimed.
Dave answers, 'They do if they give it to me.'
