i have to say that there seem to be some very knowledgeable people in this forum, both in terms of hi-fi and on other matters. it has had me wondering what you lot do? how you have managed to develop your knowledge, and how you pay for this admittedly expensive hobby.

i'll go first and say that i am a trader on the financial markets in london. i got interested in hi-fi when i was at university and a friend of mine introduced me to proper audio. he used to do hi end installations (including george lucas and larry ellisons homes) needless to say i got to play with some nice toys! i used to tease him that he was like a drug dealer saying "here, come and have a listen to this, if you like it come and talk"

going to Iron Maiden in 1978,HIFI was only an ends to a means:)

I am a music lover, not a lover of HIFI I am afraid,i just want the best kit i can afford for the type of music i listen to,hence why i am here

I also have a bit of the blokey gadget thing going off as well, unfortunatley

i worked for "bill graham presents" in san francisco when i was at university. the company ran the wharfield and filmore venues and managed to see over 150 show for free! it was always the music first, but i have to admit i lean toward the comfort of my living room now!

At 18 I dropped a possible professional footbal career to concentrate on my mathematics and computer science degree at the ETH (technical university) of Zurich. Since I was 14-16 I am in hifi but just as a medium to enjoy classical music better.
I now work as a external senior bank consultant in the IT branch.
I have nearly 20 years of bank experience in most of the bank sectors, also in dealer systems.:D
Thanks this experience, especially upgrading a SOFFEX-interface (now EUREX) between front- and backoffice I could realize enough profit to afford my house and my hifi system.
Now I'm more or less doing intraday or short time trades on ABB Ltd because it is quite volatile. Tomorrow or in a few days it is again time to jump in for a few hours. :D :D

3rd Year Student studying Business Studies here in Lancaster.
Studying for finals as we speak (horrible time) and looking for jobs (unsuccessfully).

Got into hifi a few years back when I replaced an old Amstrad micro system.

theatre technition, not operating theatres but the place of entertainment, recently took a step down the career (and salary)ladder for a beter quality of life, also being a theatre technical manager ment i spent more time doing paper work or in pointless meetings than i did rigging the shows and playing with big audio and lighting toys.previous to this i worked on the touring circuit, mainly on sound, but also doing lighting, rigging and anything else that paid the bills.my actual trade however is as an electrician, but i soon devoloped a phobia for building sites

Now I'm a local gov gadgy..[district council], leisure services.
2 years ago I was a network support gadgy, with large LAN clients+routed comms to many locations. Then again, many years ago I worked in a tw*t clinic! I also had to check the guys shaving before their vasectomies..Poor buggers, all sh*tting themselves beforehand! I did electronics at polytech, and have been a music+audio nut since I was a titch.

Just think, if you'd stuck to footy, you could have been retired, millions in the bank, and a dirty young blonde slut straddling ya... not one the best decisions eh? ;)

Not in the 70'-80' in Switzerland...
And certainly I had to get a much better physical condition (maybe also psychological :D ) so don't know how much chance I had.
But one thing is true: it was a decision in my life that I will never forget. I am still not sure I decided the right thing. I think I will regret this decision for ever.

Got into hifi because, well, aren't all computer geeks into hifi? :D

No, they're all into Star Trek, AFAICT.

I'm a door to door moustache salesman. I have no idea why I got into hi-fi, a serious character deficiency no doubt.

Nope. Star Trek is the biggest pile of steaming dog turd ever to hit the small (or large) screen. I'd actually rather stick a mace up my backside than sit through an hour of that.
