that's not a bad rule of thumb - at least for new kit.

with second hand items fetching 30% of their original rrp it goes plain sailing out the window though..

Back to the original point though, I still think you have to spend £200-£300 (second hand) to get a real noticeable jump up on the amp you've got..

The one you've got would fetch 70 ish on e-bay, so in effect you're only talking about an extra £30!

You're in a similar position to the system I had about 15 years ago... I changed amps - I think I went from one I got for about £150 to one that cost about £400 - and the difference... well I think the cheaper one was better in retrospect..

It's easy to spend money and not see any improvement with the tight budgets in question IME.

I think the Cyrus and PSX would make a significant move forward. Its an old amp but its damn good.

I'm a ruark fan ......having liked and owned there speakers

but those look particularly uninspiring from the photo...

I think the linn speaker was the more expensive ...but the linn sound is not to my taste so never listened to them.

from looks alone the linn's have it but I think they need loads of power but so do the templars ...at 88db

I've played with both the Linn speakers you link to and the Templars a fair bit.

I love ruark speakers, but the templars are diminutive little things with a sorry little sound. The reviews raved over them, but I couldn't figure out why.

The Talismans and Talisman II's are where Ruarks start getting seriously good. Not much dearer than Templars either in second hand values.

The Linn's are much better than Templars in my view, I like them a lot.

The Linn speakers would be great one's to go for if you intend a better amp in the future. They deserve it.

This incidentally is the next Linn speaker up.
