foo-foo box = a tweak that relies on some sort of 'voodoo' to work. for example see shunyata's hydra as being full of fesi (the origin of foo-foo dust in this context i believe)

a squeezebox = a box that sits near your hi fi connected to a computer either using a cat 5 cable or wirelessly. the box recieves data streamed from a pc running server software that is then turned into either a traditional analogue or digital output. think of it as a cd transport with no moving parts that does all the cd swapping for you. all you need to do is press a few buttons on a remote controll to access al lthe music stored on your pc(s).
    cheers

    saab,
a shame, as tom is finding out, they (and their ilk) really are the future, not dvd-a (titter) or sacd. yes, improved quality (of the music format) will happen in time but i can see a time where you will go to amazon and be able to buy either an mp3 (or equivalent), a 16/44.1 flac (or equivalent) or a 24/96 flac (or whatever) for slightly different prices and be able to listen to your new album within minutes. that way you have no multi-format compromises and you pay for what you want - everyone is happy.
the only problem would be copy protection but that's another argument entirely.
    cheers

    Tom,

IMO Its about time Naim got their arse into gear and come up with a high end version of the squeezebox with proper power supplies etc. I think they are missing a trick in attracting sales from a new generation of punters.

trouble is neil is that if they did they'd end up charging the earth for something that is available for less. also the faithfull have had enough shocks recently with the awful refernce series, the av gear and <horror> a subwoofer. a network audio device would just push them over the edge.
if they did make one though they'd probably take the same path as cyrus and yamaha and go the imerge type route and cock up the advantages of using a home pc as the server. if they just did a squeezebox equivalent and dac (with external inputs) then it would probably work a treat but i doubt they will.
certainly a decent psu is on the cards for my squeezebox but to be honest it's quite a ways down the list behind the speaker mods and naim kit servicing.

    tom,
certainly the cdx2 i heard was sorely tested by a naked squeezebox. with a good dac i'd say the cds3 is under threat.

    cheers

A squeeze box, with an n/c psu, some foo foo dust and a wanky wire, few board changes, scares the poo out of a cds 3, we know we have both

The rumour is they've been working on one for at least two years, with the help of Yamaha. But we all know if they ever do it, they'll charge top dollar and have people queuing up to buy it unheard.

I have to thank Naim's Customer Services for encoraging me to see just what else is out there.

    saab,
you've got to remember that if you rip it correctly the cd is stored in as near a perfect state as possible. also the 'box has a big wad of ram in it to allow for network dorpouts etc. this also performs a stage of jitter reduction in a similar way to a genesis digital lens or chord dac 64. ok so the psu, internal dac chip and analogue output stage aren;t great but stick a decent dac on the end of it and it will seriously worry a high end player (imho of course).

iirc naims pre's include a filter that cuts off frequencies over ~26khz.
    cheers
