I once knew where Staines was...
And for some highly convoluted reasons, I need to know where it is once more... or more accurately what its phone code is!
Can anyone help!?! I would really appreciate it if you can.

1784. It's (just) west of London - we have a research group there.

Staines is the home of Ali G and da Staines massiv, much respect :D

There are probably many other candidates but it vies with Slough (also quite nearby) as one of the most unremarkable and anonymous places in the UK.

I have no idea who any of the above are. However, as my dad built a *lot* of houses there, and it was once the home of some good friends (one of whom, thanks to Tones, I have managed to hook up with again), I guess it does deserve some respect.

I lodged in Staines for about a year once. Pleasant enough place, but there's nothing of note there.

The only other reason I remember Staines was when I'd just passed my driving test. I'd driven to the South Coast with some friends (from up' North) and stopped in a laybay in Staines. Whilst having a drink a rather humungous artic thundered past, creating enough wind to rock the car, leaving me with coke "stains" on my white shirt.

Apparently stanes has a parrot problem.

No seriously a number were set free and they have bred in the area.

Anyways its junction 13 on the M25 and a place of nothing to note.

I've a book called "Crap Towns - The 50 Worst PLaces To Live In The UK"

And though Staines doesn't make it in, Slough manages to sneak in at 42!

If anyone would like me to check if their town features in the top 50 just say!

Closest to me is Newport, which manages 34th.

Thats a great book, but I belive St Albans appears in there, and I thought its one of the better towns this side of the big city.

I once worked for two years in Staines, in the mid 80s. I thought it was an OK place.

Yep, St Albarns manages to just sneak in at 50!

Starts off saying about the history and nice things. Then mentions that there's no hospital or cinema........ but there's a lot of pubs!

I bought the book of Crap Towns for my dad for Christmas... some great stuff in there. Think Bridgwater was in there, probably the nearest to me.

Staines was not a bad place when I was young. Don't know what it's like now of course, but that goes for the entire UK, since I haven't been there for eight years .
A friend who was from Windsor claimed to have never set foot in Staines - which, if you know their respective geographical locations, is quite a feat. She never did say if she had been to Slough...
And what is the "Staines Massive" anyway?

Yepp, Bridgwater is awful. The smell from the cellophane factory cannot be described but even without it the place is a dump.

Good to see Basingstoke on the list but how did Bracknell escape
