"It's never dull in Hull"... I nearly went to Uni there, and I actually didn't mind what I'd seen of the place on the day we went there!

WHY oh WHY isn't Plymouth on the list? I mean, what's wrong with St John's Wood - Plymouth (especially Stonehouse/Efford/Devonport) is a sh1thole of the highest order and puts the "arsehole" in A38. The only thing going for it is Digital Blasphemy every 1st Saturday of the month, held in Tramps at the bus station!

Thank god my folks moved from there in 1999....

I lived at Derriford for about 18 months in the late eighties and had a great time. Fond memories of Dartmoor, the G-X and the Gin Distillery.

me too but the joke wore off pretty quick. they also don't answer the phone with the pugwash greeting.

my home town paid host to an instrumentatiion outfit named, ccording to local legend after two actors - john wayne and deborough kerr. they were called wayne kerr. this joke never quite wore off and still brings a smile at least to my face. they had another component to thier name that i think was rendar or similar so that the telephonist greeting was' WKR can i help you'. You can't blame them .

I use to live in Egham in a few years ago, the place you'd choose to buy a house if you weren't exactly sure where the nice parts of Staines were. ;) Well, OK it was a very convenient place to be located for an IT professional such as myself anyway at the time, what with London and the City being an equal and reasonable commuting distance away on the train in one direciton, and Reading's silicon valley in the other.

Some parts of Staines are on the river Thames, so as with most places with an upon Thames location, the nice/disireable properties are by the river. Of course, the Staines area has been in rapid decline ever since I moved out, got out while the going was still good! ;) ;)

Slough is definitely a sh!t hole, but that's my comment having only passed through it or gone there for job interviews. Certainly doesn't look like a place I'd want to live.

As for the other places mentioned in that top 50... Well, again, can't understand why places like St John's Wood and Ascot would be on there. Those are 2 places I'd not mind living in. I guess the survey might be biased towards certain things like amenaties and night life maybe? Ascot is a fairly quiet place, the only nightlife to speak of there AFAIK is the local Jazz-Funk nightclub called "Jagz" which I went to once on a company night out. :)

St John's Wood seems to be there because of traffic problems, and arrogant locals.

Ascot seems to be down to blandness. The place is now overrun by arrogant middle class range rover driving commuters. With all the green being taken over by bland £750k red brick housing.

Oxford starts off saying how it seems like an ideal place. Distinguished university, thriving center, and lots of green spaces draped over a winding river.... but all this is at the expense of dumping MOst of the poorer sections of the community in large, desperate estates. Blackbird Leys is mentioned.

London is MOstly down to the crazy housing costs.

One of the Gallagher brothers from Oasis live there doesn't he? I'm sure he fits in well there. ;)

    Fair comment, fair comment. :)

So does the author of the 50 worst book have any recommendations for good places, or is s/he just another armchair whinge merchant? ;)
