Well I tend to go for whereever's cheapest at the time. I've used wow, 101, ebay, and amazon. As I said in another thread, having done a bit of comparing on about 6cds, Play was the MOst consistantly cheap. I didn't try the www.cd-wow.com.hk site.....

The majority of my recent purchases have been used/new from amazons market place. Amazon's got a good selection, but only free p+p over £25 which is a bit poo!

Something to watch with Marketplace is not to buy say 2+ CDs from each US supplier. Otherwise, they put them in a parcel with a nice 'US postal service' value sticker on it.

Then a thief from Royal Mail knocks on your door and demands £10+ for 'VAT and customs handling' or you can't have them.....

I've only had them from UK sellers so far. A friend recently bought Terminator 3 from a US site. He had a card asking him to collect and there was a charge. When he went to the post office there was a big parcel waiting for him. payed the charge and took it home. It had about $100+ of dvds and cd in it! Not the T3 one though. A bit of a bargain way to shop though :D

That's what I do. For non classical stuff, I tend to price match Play, 101CD and CDWow against each other.

Amazon UK is good for info and sound samples, but tend to be a bit pricey so I don't buy from them unless I can't it elsewhere. Not to mention the actual pricing itself which seems to be a bit hard to work out off the top of your head until you've actually gone all the way through the checkout process.

Although I have bought new stuff from Amazon US, which is obviously good for stuff that you can't get directly in this country.

For classical, I prefer to use:

LOL! :D I hear what you're saying Graham, been there done that! :)

Edited to add: Can't remember the last time I bought off the high street!!

Pretty much all of the above! It's usually a matter of finding the best deal really, I've not ruled out using any company ever again, but Amazon come closest as the only way you can sometimes get a good deal is to have to spend £25 on shipping, otherwise their good prices on some stuff get inflated with overpriced shipping.

Record fayres are the other option I didn't see there, speaking of which, you going to the one this weekend Henryt?

I get mine from HMV (with 10% NUS discount), Music Zone and one of the best record shops on the planet, Kingbee records just around the corner from me.

Does Kingbee still have loads of second hand vinyl. Those were the days when I was an impoverished student!

Yep its still the same old place, cheap second hand 12" albums for £1 play like new. Its still packed on a saturday where you can hardly move. Though the place is looking dimgy now and the turntbale to test the records on has broke (it was a 20 year old cheap plastic JVC thing). I've not been in for a couple of week though.

The problem with that shop is you end up buying loads of albums because you can and hardly ever play them. Although I have a lot of factory stuff I bought there as its 10 times the price in shops in the city centre such as Vynil Exchange.

Well not quite a loyalty scheme (which I agree would be a great ideaa), but WOW are offering a 50p voucher with each purchase. They did the same last xmas too. It's a shame you can only use one per order though.

Usually buy from Amazon or the odd impulse buy in the high street shops - particularly if they have things on sale.

Amazon has pretty much everything of all genres (including classical), is much cheaper than the high street and most of the others (play.com etc) won't deliver to Portugal because of restrictive customs practices applied to non-EU deliveries (play.com and similar are based in Jersey which is outside the EU). Non-EU sites that do deliver to Portugal are no better, again because of ridiculous customs charges. If I have to order something from them (or from Amazon US) I'll get it sent to my work address in London and pick it up when I'm next there.

I usually batch up my Amazon orders so the P&P adds very little.

    Michael.

He he he - that's the story of my vinyl life! Got another 37 LPs a coupla weekends back and I've only played about 5 of them so far... I'm working my way through them though so that's cool...

I'll buy from wherever I can, from Ebay thru work newsgroups to HMVC/HMV etc. Never used Amazon - their 1920s style of selling (making you pay postage at the end) sucks arse. 101 are waaaay too slow at the mo and I've got 5 orders stuffed up in their system; I'll use Play next time.

Martian Records and Sainsburys in Exeter are my 2 main places for chart stuff though.

I buy from Forced Exposure - http://www.forcedexposure.com/ - and Records By Mail - http://www.recordsbymail.com/ (great for secondhand jazz vinyl, huge stock but not cheap) - quite a lot, and Amazon, of course.

Otherwise it's secondhand record shops all over London, or Rough Trade/Selectadisc/Ray's Jazz Shop/occasionally HMV or the Virgin meagre store for new stuff.
