    Hi there,
I recently found a pair of tannoy cheviot speakers abandoned in the street - they were in quite bad condition, but I've just had them repaired and they are sounding great..

But I am currently driving them from an all-in-one panasonic hi-fi that is over 10 years old. Now that I've got some decent speakers, I am starting to think it might be time to get a better amp too..

So my question is - would there be much noticeable benefit to getting a better amp for these speakers, and if so, does anyone have any recommendations of what I should think about investing in? unfortunately my budget is fairly limited at the moment so I am looking for high-quality sound and value for money (I guess everyone is!) - or should I just stick with what I've got until I can afford to spend more (maybe never)?

    Suggestions appreciated!

    Sam.

    Hi Sam,
I'm not familiar with the Cheviot (I have the Tannoy system 10). I would imagine they are pretty sensitive (As most of the big Tannoys are) so you should be able to get away with a low powered amp.
If you want new, then something from Cambridge audio would probably be the best value for money.
Secondhand - you may be able to pick up a Onix oa21 within your budget.
It seems to have gone a bit quiet round here. I would ask over at www.pinkfishmedia.net

Great find. The amp you have is probably fine.

Try finding a local dealer of second hand equipment, they should let you auditon an amp or two in shop, perhaps even with your tannoys. with a few hundred there's loads of choice.
As for the post by Fatmarly, the Onix oa21 is a fine amp, i've seen many amps come and go but the Onix is fixed...Good Luck.

another vote for the Onix - had one here for a few years and love it. Looks great too. That one is a bit overpriced I think though. I'd be thinking nearer the £300 mark for the pair. (or maybe that's just me being optimistic!)

Failing that I have a cambridge audio A3i amp and cd4 cdp you could have - I'm after £60 excl p&p. Let me know if you're interested at all. No idea how they would pair with the speakers.
