Losslessly compressed audio files from a Mac/pc into a nice DAC is a preferable alternative to a good cd player. You have easy navigation of your collection/playlists. Your DAC can take inputs from other sources as well.

I use a mac, as it's output is bit perfect 'out of the box' , I use a firewire dac , just plug it in, and an ipod 'touch' as remote control, you set the mac up to automatically rip and eject your discs, choose AIFF or apple lossless, the mac fetches the album art work, and the itunes interface is imho unbeatable.
You can play everything up to 24/192.
Sound quality is equal ( some say better ) to a cd transport through the same dac.

Re which is the best cd player

The i pod touch can source all your music from your apple mac
like you say (remote) you can use it as a pc, can it connect to
the internet via a router no wires, and does it have to plug into
your amp or can this be done without wires cheers ocean

Ocean Hi, I have my laptop ( connected to my dac) near my preamp, and I use the ipod touch, ( with a free 'remote control app) to choose which album track etc.
The ipod synchs with your itunes library , it is extremely simple and elegant .Keith.
You can connect wirelessly with an 'airport express' but I believe AE is limited to 16/44.1 and I am not sure you don't sacrifice sound quality.
