Almost bought the new hifi+ mag today only to find it was just a rehash of old reviews.
Wonder what the reasoning behind that is?
At least stereophile adds extra pages when it does its awards issue.
I'd be really annoyed if I was a suscriber.

...not to mention the fact that many people's mind's will be thinking towards CES/T.H.E. Show in Las Vegas,...not that I consider that an excuse for ripping us magazine buyers off!

The only "new" thing in it was a few more opportunities for RG to have some uninformed rants at objectivists

    OK you've lost me here....

I seem to have been elsewhere when this whole 'objectivist' vs 'subjectivist' thing kicked in, so please please please could someone tell me:-

    1) What is an 'objectivist' ?
    2) What is a 'subjectivist' ?
    3) Which one of these do I/should I belong to?
    4) Should I be worried?

Any and all answers gratefully received.

    BTW I'm easily lost......

    Thanks in advance.

    Warning,

    Doug Self is deaf ;)

His page is so full of ridiculous assumptions one has to suggest he is a very bitter man. Just listen for yourself, ignore the idiots on web sites who advise you as to what you can and cannot hear, and enjoy the music.

A clue - science does not have all the answers yet ;)

    It was a rip-off.

But then the magazine, IMO, has been going down hill for a while now.

How many components got awards ? I've never really seen the point of awards but if you are going to do them then a second opinion from a different reviewer would be nice to put a different slant on the component.

    hmmm,
not so sure about a rip off. most of the copy was new even if the subject matter wasn;t and the reviewer profiles were interesting. if you just buy the 'awards issues' of the mags due to you not being as sad as we all are in order to keep abreast of what's happening in hi-fi land then it was one of the better ones compared to the likes of the hi-fi news awards issue where a 150 quid computer surge protector was reviewed.
    cheers

You have a good point but if you are a subscriber to a magazine then you may not be as interested in awards issues as the one-off buyers.

Also if a product is given an award what criteria is it based on ? Obviously the reviewer enjoyed the product but do we really need to have the same reviewer from the original review restate his same opinion again ? If so then it would be useful to know how long the reviewer had the component for and in what other context he had been using it since the original review. How many of the comments were from memory ?

This at least makes the comments more meaningful and puts the component into some context.

But then as you are only paying 50 - 70% of the cover price as a subscriber, surely you could just shrug your shoulders and accept it as the way things are.

Plus, when you find your floorboards are bending under the weight of hifi magazines, you can throw out all the normal issues and just keep the awards issues as a handy reference :D

Seems to me you've gone pretty close to libel there Merlin.

FWIW if you cannot demonstrate a 'ridiculous assumption' then I have to presume that you don't know what you're talking about. So 'stupid' rather than 'deaf' in your case, although deafness cannot be ruled out.

Really it should be in the publishers interest not to piss-off those people who reguarly buy the magazine. The Awards issue may appeal to people who buy a magazine every now and then but is not going to please regular buyers, who what to read about, and see pictures of new stuff.

Well if that isn't a case of venting one's spleen unexpectedly I don't know what it is.

So would you say you are firmly in the 'subjectivist' camp then, Paul?
