No James waht you "think" means little to me, telling me your thoughts once was fine, but to repeatedly give me the "benefit of your wisdom" when I neither asked for it, nor needed it, is arrogance personified.

Now I'll still be your friend if you shut up about my so called audio problems, and I'll reciprocate. :)

Oh come off it. All high-end luxury goods are elitist.

I honestly think that some of you just come here to be pointlessly argumentative.

But all hi-fi (in the common use of the term) is not high-end. If it were I'd agree with you

This is getting interesting, especially 'laid back' and 'bassy', which are definitely not adjectives I'd associate with Bub's system.

Anyway I'm not sure I understand 'texture', can you describe what it sounds like? Perhaps with reference to some specific recordings?

For once, I agree with the good Doctor. However, I'd say that they can be elitist rather than they are.

Well look who's sufaced here then, better not contradict him or he'll threaten to thump me, cringe, cringe.

Paul again you are looking for an argument, I have said on accasion that I'm not very good at describing, what something sounds like, i find it like explaining orange to a blind man, so I won't bother you with trying to explain what I mean, as to wether you agree with me or not is of no consequence as we are describing something which is subjective wether you like it or not.

James, thoughts are generally private ;)

Good to see you're still at it though - you really do have some Blair/Bush like characteristics :D

Paul, the obvious question is why?

By all means, but I don't think that's really the same as just coming out with "an absence of bass is more faithful to the source than distorted bass", which is where we began.

I tried but I couldn't get my spikes just right.

BTW, I prefer to think of my hi-fi hobby (like my hobby of owning/riding many kinds of cycles) as a minority interest, rather than as elitist. I think it depends also on the attitude of the person with the hobby, as much as what the absolute cost is or how high up the bell curve for that hobby one is (I'm thinking of spending 40.000 odd crowns on the next upgrade, whereas my neighbour has just spent 10x that on a Volvo. He doesn't think he's elitist by virtue of money spent, so it can't be as simple as that.)

If my motivation partly were to do the hobby because most other people couldn't get into it (e.g., for lack of money or social position, etc.), then I would be elitist, but as has been pointed out, most people can get on the ladder for a week or two's pay, and even the top of the ladder is less than people spend on ordinary products like cars. Therefore even as I near the higher reaches of the Linn ladder, personally I am following a minority interest, rather than being elitist.

Just as SteveC says, you can get a high end system for less than even the cheapest cars so it's all about priorities. Hifi certainly isn't elitist. Elitist implies certain barriers to entry above and beyond just needing a lot of money and hifi as a hobby has neither that nor the requirement to spend a lot of money.

You put that in quotes in a reply to me, but it doesn't represent anything I've said.

Merlin, the obvious answer is because I'm interested.
