Just interested in what you lot think of him? I heard him a couple of times when he was doing pop idol, and he did stand out. Seemed like a genuine talant. Shame that everything he's released so far has been shite..... until now. Not a bad tune his new one IMO. :duck: Seen him do it with just his vocal and an acoustic guitar, on CDUK :duck: (ducks again), and was very impressed! Nice song, nice voice, and seems genuine.

    one you go then....

    Oh dear....

To be fair to the tool, I haven't heard his latest, but based on everything else he's released, I doubt I'm missing much. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt though...

Potential talent corrupted by an industry driven by profit, not music.

    On a simialar note,
I found that I quite enjoyed the couple of singles that where released by Darius form the first and second Pop idol series.

I have to say that i thought he was a total tit on the first series, but seemed to lighten up on the second one, in fact i reckon the guy is pretty funny.

I picked up his album 'dive in' yesterday for £4 from my local s/h shop. Its not a bad listen at all. I even think he wrote most of the songs himself.

Has anyone been watching the lastest series ? My kids like to watch it and so by default I've found myself taking the sit down and watch over the last few weeks. There is some girl on there called suzanne ( i think) . I thought the judges had all gone deaf up until this last week . That girl really cannot sing, or so i thought, right up until last Sat when they where doing Beatles covers. I can't remember which one she did now, but if she was some unknown and newly discovered singer, as opposed to a pop idol contestant , i would willingly have bought her version, no probs. It had a reall folky, Alanis Morrisette, suzanne vega, beth orton kinda feel to it maybe this is her type of music .
Who knows, Maybe the judges do know what they are talking about.

I heard that everything he released previously he was signed up to do and had no choice (Simon Cowell et al thinking of the screaming teens no doubt!), but now he is starting to release music that is more to his taste. Only time will tell....

Well, he can definitely sing, unlike all the recent Fame Academy lot, but I can't say I particularly like his voice. Not sure if I've heard his latest yet or not though.

Which one is he then? I always get these identikit popsters mixed up. Is he the one who did that bloody awful version of the bloody awful song "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling"?

The polite gay one without the stutter.

When he was on the original show he was doing a lot MOtown stuff and was really good. Some people said his voice was similar to JK (Jamiroquai), a little perhaps. I remember even thinking "yeah, I'd buy his stuff", but as others have pointed out, seems he's been pushed into satisfying the short term market. Seems a bit odd really as he was voted into winning by singing the MOtown stuff, why not let him do that

I've not heard the studio version properly. It may be over kill. But, the acoustic live version he did on CDUK was spot on. Seemed like a genuine guy, singing a song he feels. Watched it with my brother and both sort of looked at each other after and did that nod of aproval thing :MILD: Hope the studio version doesn't kill it. The guy has talent.

I don't understand the public's love of bland karaoke!
Even when the poop idol/fame academy/whatever "artiste" is alleged to have written the song themselves it's bland sheep-music (and that's nowt to do with Sheep Music in Presteigne - for those who don't know it check it out..).
Is there a new law banning any type of personality, talent or individuality?

By the way, must recommend again, for those who like covers, the Easy Star Allstars "Dub Side of The Moon".. You'd think "Money" was originally written as reggae!

I don't think anyone here was giving any credit to "bland karaoke". I certainly wasn't. IMO the guy's got a good voice, and is now starting to live up to his potential. If you've got natural ability, then you've got it. simple. Going through the pop idol/fame academy machine to *make it* will have you labeled fake etc.... and you are in a way sort of agreeing to have your style divtated to you. As Stumblin said....
Just because the way they go about getting their *fame* is a little questionable, saying that. it is a public vote  doesn't mean they're ALL talantless.

I can't believe i'm defending this!

Saw Will Young on TOTP last night; still not my cup of tea I'm afraid. He does have some talent though.

Yeah - I do find it quite entertaining (whilst finding the idea of manufacturing a star rather unpleasant) and I can't believe my favourite girlie was voted off. Thing is she had a very distintive voice, one that you either like or dislike.

In fairness, I don't think she had what it takes to be the kind of pop idol they're after. However, as a front person for a band (e.g. Blondie, Moloko) she would be superb because of that voice and how she looks. Let's hope someone snaps her up.

I'm sure that Sam's gonna win this time.

As for Will Young - great voice, nice bloke - needs some decent songs though!

I watched TOTP last week, what a load of utter bollocks. I really detest this current trend for commercialised karaoke as typified by Will Young etc. Simon Cowell etc have proved that producing music totally without art is actually possible, and amazingly they can sell it in quantity too. Who is it that actually buys this shite?

    Tony.

will young is a friggin' clown - like the rest of them really...

however, their earnings should be performance related, instead of the 150 notes or whatever they earn a week...

I'd imagine they earn much MOre than 150 notes a week! Unless them notes are pretty big ones ;)

Dissing him because of the way he got "where he is", is a bit besides the point. There's a thing about how music can only be wortwhile if you have to live on the street for 10 years stealing the occasional loaf and drinking water from the gutter to get there. Why? Yes, the whole manufacturing is taking it a bit far IMO, and hasn't really produced anything or real substance (as far as these shows go), but, I think Will Young has potentialy some great tunes in him! He's hinted at a unique voice, he seems a genuine guy, and good luck to him! I'm not a *fan*. Just having seen him perform on CDUK that time, there was no real way to fault the guy on that performance!

It's not the way he got there - there's a whole load of bland karaoke that didn't arrive via Poop Idol/Stool Academy..
My main problem is with the fashion for inferior remakes and lowest common denominator - because music biz types aren't willing to take a risk. Film industry's the same (e.g. Italian Job, Alfie etc.)
They also know that all it takes to sell pap is constant exposure. Folks seem to fall for it just because it's on the telly. Bleedin' sheep!
