Does your broadband connection come in to the house via a telephone line or via cable? If via a phone line then you should choose a model with a modem built in; if it's via cable then choose a cable modem.

Netgear is popular, looks nice and is thoroughly decent.

I use one of these at home.

Linksys is (IMO) v.good but does look more industrial. I use their Wireless Access Points in connection with my work. This is their wireless router with modem built in.

I would be very surprised if you had to upgrade the XP machine to Vista. Likewise the memory should be OK too.

Setting up can seem like a bit of a mountain at first, but if you take baby steps it'll be fine.

    Good luck

I know b*****-all about computers, but set up a Belkin modem router without any problems. My elderly laptop runs XP and my daughter's flashy Dell runs Vista. All connected without any hassle.
