The MadHippy : you said: "electrickery"

That was what Catweasel called it. Was he in mind when you said it?
Catweael was fairly funny. I recall he was asked to wash down an open top MG car. He wasn't doing much so the owner showed him by slooshing the side of the car with the water from the bucket. Catweasel follwed the demonstration up with a complete drenching of the interior ! :)

This is kind of my view, if people were been killed all the time then I could understand it, but electricty is a lot safer than say gas which can not only leak but cause poisining. At least with electrics if you do somthing wrong with it a blown fuse lets you know.

I am not going to let part P stop me. I will do change light fitting, sockets etc in the kitchen as I bloody well please. I always make sure I do everything by the book.

However I know how to wire a house but I would never attempt this, I would get a professional to add a circuit or do any major rewiring work.

But for light fitting, plug sockets et al its just a bit of knowledge and common sense. Its about knowing your limits, the problem is some people don't know their limits and this what causes the fatailities.

Edit what I also don't understand reading that link is who the hells going to enforce it? Hello Mr I am arresting for the suspision of wiring in a replacement light switch. WTF

If its all so ilegal why do any high street shop still sell electrical parts?

I think the law should say they must be wired according to standards but simple thinks should not have to be installed by an election.

Most people like me are just totaly confused about this no so called law, if it wasn't for this site I would never have heared of it.

Is it actually ilegal for me to somthing as simple as replace a plug socket? But its perfectly legal for the 1980 sockets to be still in place with no insulation on ther earh core?

Woah! I was so paranoid about that happening to me at Glastonbury this year that I nearly soiled myself during the 8 hour stormathon! (6.3 with all that metal in my gob (almost every tooth has a filling ;)) - you can see my point!

Electricity is scarey - I don't have a problem working with it, but am always careful, except for that time I tried to turn a 3-way lightswitch around with the power on by mistake - nice arc, and total blackout! Thank god for circuit breakers...

Oh, and there was this time when I put my hand round the back of a monitor to push the IEC lead in properly (there was this fizzing sound, and flickery image on the CRT) - nice 240v nip! Luckily my hand got blown out of the way by it but it hurt like hell.

He he he - nice one 'cat - funniest case of selective quoting ever ;)

As it happens, I was sober at the time, and was sober (barring some cider!) the night before too!

    I'm naturally paranoid though :)

well I must be approaching double figures for the number of 240v mains shocks by now, and it still hurts like hell every time.

and 3 capacitor discharges, one at 350v serious ouch. must be more careful.
