as a minor aside- someone hasn't got back to me in 4 days after winning an auction of mine- how long is it before i can offer it to the 2nd highest bidder without incurring negative feedback from the winning bidder??

    cheers

Did you state that they must contact you within a certain time bracket? Have you tried contacting them yet? 4 days isn't too long really, longer than i've experienced, but i'd not jump in with negative feedback. Remember he/she will probably return the complement. I'd give it a week and several emails before making another MOve. And then inform the 2nd placed bidder of the situation.

mine is just the usual shit....not as described, etc. not happy with it.more to come later after issue gets sorted...

I have won an item too, and its been 4 days and can't email the guy for some reason, so will either have to pull his details or something...he hasn't sent anything to me, too, so these things do happen....

I posted something on the hfc website about a few dodgy dealings lately...

mentioned the linn cd12 with no foto and a zero feedbacker,
that audionote valve amp, bank transfer only...
mark levinson amps going for about 2k, when what 20k new,
same with a few krells..fpb 600s and 700s starting at 1k, no reserve...hmmm spot the dubious ones...

What's the safest way to pay for an item on e-bay? Does anyone have any experience buying from midlands-audio?

anyway is a risk IMO, maybe escrow but ive not used it
Cheque, transfer these are both traceable so you can prove payment at least

Midland Audio Exchange are trade advertisers over on pfm. I've never heard anything other than great reports about them; if there was anything to worry about I'd definitely have heard about it by now!

Safest way to pay is PayPal or NoChex or similar unless you are going to collect in person (or have an item delivered in person).

Escrow looks like a good idea but I would avoid it if possible, especially if a seller/buyer insisted on using it. If you have to use it make sure you only use one of eBay's recommended escrow providers as there have been a number of escrow scams recently - one of which I uncovered :) (see https://www.audio-forums.com/as-rediect/showthread.php?threadid=1649 )

Even legit escrow can lead to all sorts of problems, particlarly if you're a seller. The problem is that a buyer gets a certain time period (usually 7 days) in which to "inspect" the goods and if he's not happy (doesn't have to have a valid reason) he can just send them back. You end up losing a sale, having the postage costs and hassle and having to auction the item all over again. Unscrupulous "buyers" have used this method to "borrow" things and of course if it gets returned to you not in the state you sent it there's little you can do about it :inferno:

i don;t think i'd ever buy anything from an individual or shop that i'd not heard of before if i couldn't pick it up myself. to be honest whever i've bought something i've always picked it up myself and paid in cash and got a reciept thanks to the horror stories you hear about parcel carriers. i know others have had good experiences from importing and buying / selling vie the web but to me it's a risk i'm not willing to take. plus if you're buying from a similarly minded audio geek you usually get to have a listen to their kit over a drink or 2 which is nice.

    cheers

on the whole it works very well, apart from the dodgy ones and the blantant tossers who try to get some money back for the slightest reason..
I have bought and sold about 100 items of all sorts, and none really dodgy, a few of try it ons, one or two genuine greiveances, most of which amicably sorted.

Its inevitable one day that something will go wrong but obviously best to spot the dubious ones, no foto and zero feedback with lots of cash asking, maybe overseas, maybe demonstrating little understanding of the item. Good signs are a nice description with original box and obviously cherished, with nice emails.

If its pricy, I always seek to collect in person.

But it is only a means to sell and buy stuff, and for us non-professional sellers, ie just passing bits on now and then, some of the 'mechanics' of ebay are getting a bit much....escrow..you have to pay someone, like you say, they can reject it, having to drive 150 miles to inspect a bit of damage and make sure someones happy, my brother advocates this, but its too much realistically. All for a good bit of feedback.
I think maybe one day, it will become too much hassle, and people will use it less.

The relays are presumably filled with hot air.
