Ever heard a new band / first record and eagerly bought the follow-up album the day it appeared, only to find it was utter shite?

    Here's my starter:

Elastica - first album admittedly derivative but great singalong thumping kind of stuff full of strong, simple tunes. Followed by....The Menace, without a single mitigating minute in it.

I don't believe this! I read your thread title and immediately thought of Elastica's "The Menace", then read your post naming just that!

    Tricky - Pre Millenium Tension.

First album "Maxinquaye" was excellent, PMT was just a pretentious mess with pretty much zero musical value.

Mike, I know some people say that musical choice is completely down to personal choice......... but you're obviously off your bonce mate!

Maxinquaye is a superrrrrrrrrrrrrrrb album, and hard to follow up. But PTM aint that bad! Infact, I think i'll put it on after this album finishes!

As for follow ups, I never got Elasticas follow up. The self titles debut had a lot of play in my house when it came out (and I played it over the weekend for the first time in ages too), I think I heard the follow up once....... didn't grab me at all.

Lambs follow ups to the debut album, were far from pants, but not a patch on the debut.

    I'll have a think.

    Good thread though :)

edit: Oh! Oasis! Nothing they did after Definitely Maybe came close IMO (as an album - bar some individual tracks).

Sorry MO! - can't agree with you about PMT . I think we've argued about this one before though ;)

I was going to mention Oasis aswell, everything after Definitely Maybe was errr....the same album over again

Here's a slightly different one: Goldfrapp, Black Cherry. The first album "Felt Mountain" was awesome and when I first heard Black Cherry I was like "Is this the same band? ". It has absolutely nothing in common with the first album, I mean, totally different type of music so I can imagine a few people would have been disappointed but I actually like it quite a lot, so it doesn't strictly belong here :shame:

    LMAO!

Yep, I think I've had to point out your being wrong on this before ;)

I don't think he's done a weak album. Well at least the ones I own. Maxinquaye, PMT, Juxtapose, Angels With Dirty Faces, Blowback, and Vulnerable. Maxinquaye is top dog, but the others are all good in their own way too. You're clearly mad! :D

    As for goldfrapp.....

I'd heard them a few times over a mates house a while back. Sounded quite good, sort of a middle ground between Lamb and Portishead. However, I've since got a a copy of felt MOuntain which didn't do much for me at all. Only a brief listen, but it wasn't what I was after. Guess it was the other album I prefered!

    Cheers

    disagreeing MO :p

I know I didn't hear them at the time, but have discovered the albums in order of release since, and the two follow-ups to Marquee Moon by Television are quite disappointing... but in comparison to one of the greatest rock albums ever that's not too shabby I guess!

"There's No Other Way" was for me a great poptastic debut single, then it was all down hill after that when they revealed their true "indie" colours. ;)

Yeah, but "There's no other way" is an indie song too - it's definitely not pop :)

Guess what, guys? I too thought "The Menace" as soon as I read the title. Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K. How "The Menace" ever got released is beyond me - it's total crap! I've played my copy twice.

Other than that, possibly Kula Shaker's "Pigs peasants and astronauts" is another good example. The only reason my copy stays in my collection is because of the escalator on the cover! (I own "Sound of drums" on a CD single)

Kula Shaker made another album   ;)

I've not heard all of their stuff, but L7 deserve a mention me thinks. Bricks are heavy was rocket fule for the pre/early teen that I was. "Pretend we're dead" A classic! And Shitlist an anthem! Heard a couple of the later albums and didn't think much. I'd possibly not be overly impressed with Bricks if I only heard it now for the first time. Tastes have changed, and such....

Not heard anything of them for quite a while now, apart from the first few tracks off hungry for stink not too long ago. ANDRE!!!!!!!!!! Might be something good aMOngst their later works, but not that I've heard.

Oh, and Pearl Jam. Ten was great! I don't think I've listened to either of the other two albums of theirs I have for a lonnnnnnnng time. Vitaolgy and Vs. I may find them MOre appealing now, or perhaps even less! (infact only just realised they may have gone missing).

I would have thought someone might have mentioned Air by now! Bring it on! :gatling:

Michael's right about PMT, and MO's right about Felt Mountain: both stinkers, FM in particular consisting of Star Trek incidental music, but unfortunately lasting far longer.

James is right about MO being right about Mike being wrong about FM.

However, Bub is wrong about MO being wrong about mike being wrong, and in saying that Mike is right about PMT!

    Hi Mo,

Kula Shaker first album was called "K" & is consider to be much much better than the follow up. they split up not long after the 2nd album.

    Hi HenryT & Dom,

The Blur debut single was 'She's so High' from late 1990. This was a hit single, top 50. There's no other way was the 2nd single and a top 10 hit.

Blur were very much a pop band at the time. I remember seeing them in 1991 & the gig was fun of kids. They were marketed was the Baggy/Madchester groups of the time. This style was very much pushed at the kids. They were also classed as indie due to having guitars. So they were aimed at more than one market. But they were never on an indie label & they had the weight of EMI behind them.

Oh yeah - good point on "She's so high" - a great track. "Bang!" is cool as well.... I liked most of their stuff but I hate "13" and wasn't so hot on "Blur" either.

Am I the only one who still likes "The great escape" - in particular "He thought of cars" and "Yuko and Hiro"?

"Felt mountain" is Goldfrapp's first IIRC - and it's great. You're all wrong on it! Star Trek samples though? That's putting me off - Star Trek is a load of boring old poo if you ask me - DS9 and Enterprise are tolerable in small doses, but everything else barring the 1960s series is cack. And I'll stick to that no matter how much stick I'll get.

L7 are great - "Bricks..." is obviously the better one, but "Hungry for stink" is pretty decent. Their standout tracks still have to be "Shitlist" and "Wargasm" though.

Has to be The Second Coming - especially with the X years wait and a title like that!

I was waiting for someone to mention this.

At the time the press ripped it to shit! It's a pretty damn fine album though me thinks. If you take it on its own and don't look for the previous sound (which aint there that much) then it's good. Infact, there's some track on there which, though a different style, are as good as some of the earlier stuff IMO.

The Second Coming is a superb album. I remember the first time I heard Love Spreads on the Evening Session and it was everything that I hoped for and more.

The single was bought on the day of release (a friend of mine got it, along with all other 7 copies they had in Binary Star (RIP) for some of the rest of us that couldn't get into town that day). No disappointment. Skived college the day the album came out and played it 3 or 4 times, went to the pub, came back and played it again! Sounded even better!

    haha!

I remember the first time they played Love Spreads on the evening session too. Think i've still got a recording of the show somewhere!

When was the last time you looked forward to a new release that much?
