I really like this idea and I have enough spare parts to build a Cyrix P333 system with 64MB RAM, perhaps run a strip down version of Linux on it.

I wouldn't need a built in optical drive or anything like that, the machine is just a p*ss take.

I am not too sure on his suggestions for a PSU though, how come that one is in a small enclosuer and PC ones have always needed large heatsinks and fans? I know its becuase the MOSFETs get hot, but how does the one he suggests differ?

All I need really inside the box is the motherboard and hard drive.

It just seems such a cool thing to do, and it gives me an excuse to get back into electronics because as soon as I graudate that soldering iron is coming out.

should be easy enough although the mobo for a Cyrix p333 is unlikly to fir in a C64 case.

as for the PSU how do you think laptops work and most Ix systems, they have a smaler wattage though and they dont really need the extra but a p333 may well need it.

    check http://linitx.com/index.php?cPath=24 for power supplies.

You could always visit the store, see what they have, price it up and then make your purchasing decission.

    Should work.

Yep I wanted this to be low budget though, my existing motherboard does fit into the old MKI style case, the fan may be a problem, but the original C64 is quite a high profile design so there should be enough clearence.

More serious issues are PCI slots, as this board dosn't have anything built in other than video I would need to make my spare PCI and Ethernet cards fit, I can't really afford a new motherboard either in case I break it.

The power supply problem is solved because my IBM base unit has a tiny ATX PSU and I plan to but that system into a new case before I sell it.

Yep was just looking at them, they will solve my PCI problem, although its cheaper just to buy an old base unit with them in, I am hoping an old base unit may have a small motherboard too, you can get the old small form factor PII's for virtualy nothing.

I came over all funny looking at that C64 project. The geek inside is slowly re-awakening!
