Intrigued by the comments of some Forumeers, I acquired this:
There is no doubt that Mr. Malmsteen can play a lot of notes very rapidly with admirable technical facility. However, it's a great pity that, among all these notes, Mr. Malmsteen couldn't have included some music. There are folk, I realise, who enjoy these long, self-indulgent, shrieking guitar solos that typify heavy metal, but when you have one that apparently lasts the entire length of a CD... I confess that I haven't listened to it all - what I've heard so far convinces me that I don't want to hear any more. The thing is simply totally lacking in any sort of musical coherence, just basically a long "gee, aren't I terrific?" ego trip, with only a few bits of relief (occasionally some nicely played acoustic guitar). "Too many notes, Mozart," as the Emperor said to Wolfie of that ilk in "Amadeus". Except there was order and indeed genius in Mozart's works. There is none in Yngwie Malmsteen's.

So, one CD for anyone who wants it. Pay its post and packing to you (probably about £5 to the UK) and it's yours.

    Now sold.

I am in complete agreement. A guitarist friend of mine recently showed me a video of this guy playing guitar, and whilst he was sitting there going "Oh my God... this guy is amazing!" I thought it was some kind of joke.

What's more, I can't believe that Fender have released a custom shop guitar for him!

Give me the Stevie Ray Vaughan Strat anyday - drool :D

Shame that Steve Vai appears to have gone the same way. Amazingly technically capable, definitely. Good music...questionable.

Malmy boy is very much up his own ass, A fine technical player for sure, no soul or real feel in his playing.
Satch too has gone this way. Now Try Andy Timmons or Eric Johnson
Blackmore can play Bach's bits and pieces very well, when he's in the mood.

When I want the guitar hit these days it tends to be De Lucia/McClaughlin/De Meola I must admit. Somehow they tend to include a bit of music as well as not being able to hide behind electrickery. That's not to knock 3G, Vai, Satch et al at times.

A mate of mine who is a guitarist/vocalist for a metal band (called Katharsis) who supported Malmy when he came to the Wolves civic would agree with you!

He said Malmy was a right arrogant so and so, barely acknowledging the support bands presence, and said that until they got him some grip tape for his preciouscowboy boots he was refusing to play as he said the stage was too slippy and he might fall over It was at such a late stage that they had a job getting the fussy sod some grip tape, and his bands suggestion of a change of footwear was apparently dismissed with a flick of the hand. How rock and roll

As for Yngwie's music, I can't say I've heard enough to pass comment though if its similar to Satch and Vai I expect I'm not missing much. I can listen to Satch in small doses, but the lack of lyrics and the way its just blatant showboating makes a whole album somewhat dull to me.

I can appreciate the incredible skill required to play guitar like these guys, but the technical brilliance doesn't make up for a certain lack of something.

So what about Joe Satriani? Personally I think its crap, but it has some music in it I suppose.
