That's a very good price. I was in a city called Zhong Shan in China a few weeks ago, spotted a few DVD recorders in the shopping centre for 1500RMB, about £110. Aldi has to import the recorders to UK from China, then pay the import duties and with VAT on top, the recorders are excellent value for money!

    Regards
    Hon

But you can't buy beer in Richer Sounds.

    or chocolate

You could slip one of these babies into the shopping trolley far more easily than popping into a hi-fi shop ;)

What i find mildly amusing is that both Aldi and Lidl (?) seem to get frowned upon as cheapo 'poor peoples' shops in the UK. I must admit it is not a store we ever used ourselves until a few years ago . My wife made a new a German friend and she couldn't believe her luck when Lidl opened up a new store locally a few years ago. She took 'er indoors on her first Lidl shop. We particularly like the Yoghurts in our house and of course the Milka chocholate is always a favorite too, ( along with all the different bratties, fricks, and other savory pork sausage types, yum , yum :D ).

Neither Aldi or Lidl where shops that i remember when i lived in W. Germany in 1988-89. I went to Munich/Bavaria earlier on this year and they were pretty much the only two supermarket chains that i saw, every small town/village that i drove through seemed to have at least one or the other. I figured that they must be pretty similar to Tesco, Safeway, Sainsbury, etc in the UK ?

Why buying a crate of Lager every week or so and then exchanging the crate for a full one has never caught on in the UK is beyond me, if only from a re-cycling point of view.

Oh yeah, good spot on the DVD recorder front Tom. Although i think SKY+ is the direction I will be going in for programme recording duties soon. I assume that the SKY+ box has some kind of HDD in it ? It looks really neat especially as you can do everything via the info pages and the SKY remote...

Sky plus is the way to go, they have a new one with 80 hours worth(4X) for around £400, although you can get a lot on the standard one you just can't always keep it, get a cheap dvd recorder to keep any films you want(although once I've seen a film I don't want to see it again).

If you buy the standard Sky+ box for £200 and find that the 20 hours or recording isn't enough, you can fairly easily replace the 40GB hard drive with a bigger one. A suitable 160GB hard drive costs about £55.

Do they not need some kind of formatting, i'd be very interested in how you did this, as it is something I'd like to do.

I'm sure Markus will be able to tell you better, Sid, but I think that Aldi started out by offering a relatively small selection of goods at good prices. As it didn't try to offer a wide spectrum of stuff, it could cut prices. Moreover, if there were items available at a good price, Aldi would buy them and offer them too, for as long as they lasted. The shops themselves had no fancy shelving, and in many cases the stuff was sold out of the packing cases in which it came - the staff just plonked them on the floor, opened them and stood back as the customers charged (or they charged the customers). The Aldi at Grenzach-Wylen, one of the German towns that crashes into Basel, and you wouldn't know where one ends and the other begins, were it not for the Zoll in the middle of the road, is still very much like this. Last time I visited, it was offering very large TV sets at some absurd price. So, no, not your average Tesco at all.
