American Bashing

I was going to let it pass but as you remind us on another post that you 'saved us from the Nazis' may I remind you that we had been fighting them on our own for nearly 4 years before you decided to join in.

Where are you getting 'nearly 4 years' from? Britain fought Sept 1939 to December 1941 when the USA joined the war. That's just over two years!

All this WWII talk always does my nut.

The only people old enough to remember WWII that I've met do so with a sense of calm. There seems little anger among them any more.

The anger seems more reserved for people born 20-40 years after the war was even fought.

" my grandma this "

" my great uncle charlie that "

With the greatest possible respect for those that fought and died.

Blah Blah.

My father in law mentioned a payment to the USA for their services in the war. How much was this? I honestly dont know.

To the gentleman who insist on bashing Americans whats up?
We are suppossed to be allies. I came to ZG to talk to you gents on the other side of the pond and share some audio info.
However I get the feeling were not well liked here. Why the inuendos and snide remarks? There is evev one dude who braggs about being an American basher. Can't we all just have a pint and get along. Our parents might have been in the same foxhole in 1942 fighting TOGETHER.

My colleagues (from LA) and I were amused by the "Jesus loves evryone, you are blessed too" written by out waitress on our restaurant bill in Indianapolis yesterday. We received quite a few of these "greetings" last week (we were there for a training course). The following discussions were more a case of west coast bashing the mid-west than a Brit bashing Americans:D.

Hindsight often has 20 20 vision and when aided by the internet can and sometimes does attract comment from the shallow end of the gene pool and this is often seen whenever the subject of America is discussed. As mentioned previously it is sometimes hard to divorce the shortcomings real or not of those elected to power from those who elected them thus leading sometimes to over generalizations that taint the people of a country with the actions of their leaders.

All this is not a million miles away from peoples love it or hate it reaction when biting into a slice of Marmite covered toast. I am sure that America can be replaced with most if not all of the other UN Members and a lively General Chat debate will be sure to follow.

Perhaps I am well-placed for a little comment here.

I live in this tiny country, just next to Germany, the Real Bad Guy70 (!!) years ago. Wel, we're on speaking terms with our FORMER ennemies for decades now. Apart from the occasional joke (style Basil Faulty's "don't mention the war") there's no hard feelings left.
I live in this tiny country, divided into 3 (yes three) language groups, struggling hard to get along together-nowadays needing more than half a year to establish a gouvernement after the last elections-but when I go out for mountain biking across the "language-frontline" and speak to locals, there's not a trace of hard feelings either.

US and UK people quarreling like this, or sending signals of disrespect on the basis of WW II-related matters is utterly incomprehensible to me. Especially on a forum like this.
One can focus on the "U" in common or on the "S" and "K" that distinguishes both.
