brown flat thing.

    ive just replaced the on/off/speedchanging control on my turntable. the last switch had a big brown flat thing ( it wasent a resistor i dont think) terminated either end on both the switch terminals.
    my new switch is now noisy when i switch it on and off , so , was the big brown thing to keep the switch quiet?

    the big brown thing looked a bit like this

    it was a supressing capacitor, to stop switch noise.
