Budget amplifier

You'd be lucky to find a 2nd hand A21a for £300, but if you did then it'd be well worth the stretch - simply beautiful sound.

The original A21 can be had for anything between £5 and £200, depending if you're lucky enough to find one at a car boot sale (I bought mine from a gent who had bought 3 of them at boot sales) or a serviced one in good nick from a dealer. The A21 can still hold it's own, although it's not exactly 'aggressive', more genteel perhaps...... If you can find one for less than £50 in working order you won't be disappointed.

The amp is more powerfull than you need but it outperforms everything I have heard below £8000 (which is conveniently the price of Krell Class A 200w, which sounds better).
You've not heard much then, Peter :) Rotel is good, though.

Is the original poster still here? I would recommend a 2nd hand Cyrus Two. Bloody brilliant for the money. More up beat then the A21, which is more about tonal richness.

thanks a lot for all the suggestions, quite a few to keep me going ill try and find some. to whoever offered me one of the quad 33/405 ill have a think, thanks anyway ill pm you if i intend to get it.

yer not many of the suggested amps on ebay atm, ill try have a look elsewhere... if anyone spots anything else give me a shout

roy, a naim nait isnt a bad one if its your first 'proper' amp. It should perform faultlessly for you, and being Naim you can sell it for what you bought it for in five years time.

theres a nait 3 at the emporium (www.emporiumhifi.co.uk) for £250. You might get a cheaper one from e-bay, I dont know.

to be honest, I think its at this kind of price point that Naim stuff really shines.

If you want to spend less than £250, I think Rotel is a good shout too. You can get a 'passable' second hand Rotel amp for less than £30 on the used market. I have one right next to me attached to the PC as we speak! Dont dismiss it on price, I'd put it up against anybodies new amp at £200.

ah hello bottleneck, you were the one you advised me a few months back... i didn't manage to get the densen beat on emporiumhifi.co.uk tho. My guess is a decent good value amp will do... i hope not to overspend however. thanks for the advice thought.
